If it's a binary choice, then the answer is no. No CB, when we probably needed even 2. Right hand side left hanging. Striking options now consist of a raw Italian kid who has to settle into things even though I have high hopes for him and DCL who isn't currently scoring enough to be a first choice striker, and I don't consider Tosun and Niasse as being good enough, so there was a failure there also. The players out weren't all we wanted either.

Non-binary answer gives a lot of reasons why... which are either explanations or excuses depending on how you look at it. The injury to Gblammo brings into sharp relief the hole left by Gana. The other positions may have been close to being sorted but fell through - which may be acceptable in a one off incident, but we should have done more. Now the manager is in the firing line though and that is due to the transfers not coming off straight away and that's a lot to do with Brands.. After the first transfer window which came off very well for Brands given the disarray we were in, so he still has some good will in the bank with me from that. There won't be any come next January if we're not doing well and we need someone or in Summer if he has another window like this.

I cant help but think that if Martinez was allowed to stay at the club all this time and was still there we would be in a significantly better position right now than we actually are squad wise and league position. For that reason I think davek was right all along
If Martinez was available, he'd probably be an ideal match up under Brands. He doesn't have to deal with transfers in the national side, and perhaps it's something international managers learn to do without any final control over in this matter. But only if he'd consider defending and set pieces as being vital parts of the game!

I can say this safe in the knowledge that he isn't likely to return.

None of your figures take into account wages. If we had to offer Bernard mega wages to sign on a free, that's going to be taken into account by anyone wishing to buy him. That's why so many of the players who are no longer in the managers plans are still on the books. We've paid a premium to get them here and no-one else will match it, regardless of transfer fee.

That's a fair point.

I think Bernard's on about 120k a week, and if someone else is "only" going to pay him 70k a week, then, over a couple of seasons, that'd be a 5 million pounds difference, so we might end up selling him for 15 million rather than 20 million, and they could use the 5 million "saved" to push his wages up a bit to compensate.

Bernard's pretty much the exception though, and i don't think we'd be sort of offers for the likes of Richarlison, Gomes and Digne at the sorts of prices I was talking about.

Good post mate.

How's your poll going mate ?
Even though we are all cheesed off at how the season is going , it seems that most agree that the DoF should have got another CB in , but that the failings lie with our Marco.
If things continue as they are the DoF will only fail if he doesn't sack Silva.

He failed this summer and has been seen to fail, as the poll underlines.

Unfortunately he’s being let down by the manager

hopefully Marco sees the error of his ways and try’s something, well err a bit different. Maybe a change in formation and dropping the Icelandic statue

I wondered if Brands intentionally didnt go the extra yard for Rojo, Doucoure and Zaha who to me look a step away from his usual approach...

Particularly Doucoure, no more Koeman type Klaassen, Schneiderlin, Martina signings.
