From another Everton forum, which I think makes some fair points pro and con Brands' performance so far:
"...instead of looking at the negatives that everyone is focusing on, e.g. failing to sign a CB and being stubborn with Doucoure and Zaha instead of looking for alternatives I thought I'd compare his signings with those of our peer group over the last three transfer windows:
Leicester: Tielemans, Perez, Praet, Justin, Hume, Maddison, Pereira, Söyüncü, Benkovic, Ward, Ghezzal, Evans.
I think Leicester have done well.
West Ham: Haller, Fornals, Ajeti, Cardoso, Roberto, Martin, Anderson, Diop, Yarmolenko, Fabianski, Perez, Balbuena, Silva, Sanchez, Fredericks, Wilshere.
Bit of a mixed bag there.
Wolves: Jimenez, Neto, Coutrone, Dendoncker, Jordao, Cristovao, Valleho, Dadasov, Traore, Patricio, Jota, Boly, Afobe, Moutinho, Bonatini, Vinagre, Kilman, Kitolano.
Some great signings and it's bit early to judge some of the summer purchases.
Watford: Sarr, Dawson, Pedro, Dele-Bashiro, Welbeck, Dalby, Deulofeu, Masina, Foster, Sema, Navarro, Wilmot, Quina, Sibo.
Doesn't look too good. Considering that is three windows worth of signing no wonder they are struggling.
And as a reminder here are ours:
Iwobi, Kean, Gomes, Gbamin, Delph, Lössl, Richarlison, Mina, Digne, Bernard.
At the moment it looks like Leicester has done the best job. Some shrewd signings and they have quite effectively plugged the holes in their squad. Wolves could be next best depending on how some of their summer signings (e.g. Coutrone) do.
While Brands has done a good job and has been hindered by the deadwood he had to get rid first I wouldn't say he has done an amazing job so far. For that he should have found one or two more Digne level signings. The positive thing is that none of the players look like total busts either. Gbami is of course still up for debate and Lössl is just backup anyways. There is a lot of potential there so those signings could prove to be great in a few years time. Richarlison obviously has been good but he was also very expensive so anything less would have been poor. So it looks like at least the scattergun approach under Walsh is gone. Signings have also been about strenghtening weaknesses even though not all problem areas have been addressed yet. So I think he has done a good if not spectacular job so far looking at the bigger picture."
