I made my mind up about the people a long, long time ago, I only have to look at the White House over in Murica to determine that the people are all utter morons.
I must say, and all joking aside, I did like your thoughtful post here:

Considering the absolute mess we were in, the utter dirge, I think he's done quite well.

I don’t think we could have done any worse than the previous season tbf. Getting rid of 80% of Steve Walsh and Koemans deadwood and flops helped massively. Not taking away the fact Silva brought in some very good signings in Digne, Gomes and Richarlison, with the help of Brands of course. Let’s not forget tho that although we finished 8th we spent most of last season again languishing in the bottom half and only really turned up when the party was all over and were left fighting for scraps with powerhouses Wolves and Leicester.

Having seen Martinez have a ‘good’ first season then go on to capitulate and Koeman do the same, early on this season the signs are not looking good for this current manager. He has done nothing in any game I have seen under him to suggest he has what it takes to drag us out of this mess he’s got us into early on.

I’m happy. Sure another CB would have been nice but meh, we still had a lot of dross to sort out first. We’re crap at the minute but it’s certainly not got anything to do with a missing 3rd choice centre half.

Overall I am satisfied with Brands, but there were glaring misses this summer. He must take responsibility for that.

Nonetheless, Silva should be doing at least somewhat better with the squad available, we are not as bad as results and performances have portrayed.

They are collectively responsible, but Silva as the man in the dug-out, is the one with his neck on the line.

I'm happy with each of the players brought in. I don't think any of them are bad signings.

I am not happy we didn't get a CB and that we sold our best player. It's also very risky to not have got a forward who has a proven record to go along with Kean and DCL.

Is he to blame? No. The players and Silva take that responsibility. But is he partly at fault, definitely? He can't get a free ride. He gets praise for what he does well but equally I believe he needs to be more proactive with getting deals done. He's said two years running that he doesn't like waiting until the last minute. Well, he's waited until the last minute for two seasons and, this last window, there was no reason to do so.

We need to - as fans - get out of the mentality of 'first-choice'. It's half of the problem with the side as it is.

We needed competition but also options. We have seen in the last two games how one-paced our defence is. I like both Keane and Mina, but a CB was a must this summer and he didn't deliver. To add to it, we sold our best player who did so much work in protecting that back four.

Now, I am happy with Gbamin in the long-term and his injury is unfortunate, but he's hardly going to come in and do as good a job as Gueye did straight away.

Unfortunately, we have a manager at the moment who can't see the wood for the trees and is trying to play the same way as we did when we had Zouma and Gana - two players I feel Brands and Silva have both underestimated the importance of when it came to our good run.

The issue is about the purchases (and non-purchases and sales for that matter) of the DoF. Are you happy with what he did deal-wise this summer?

I don't think any of the players are bad signings. But it's the deals that weren't done are what the issues are.

Yeah, I did qualify the question later in the thread.

Players bought
Omission of a CB
Failure to blend the strikeforce
Sale of Gueye

They're the major issues of Brand's summer window for me.

Have we a squad that can challenge for the top four ?... certainly not.
Have we a squad that can challenge for the top six ?... some pundits said that we may be the team that could challenge but it doesn't look like it at the moment.

Have we a squad that could get a point away to Bournemouth or a win at home to Sheffield Utd. Absolutely we have.
The last two results have been 100% down to the manager and nothing to do with the DOF.

As disappointing as the result was it was the shape of the team , the lack of tempo, the lack of guile that disappointed me most.

I was at the game on Saturday and I came away feeling that under this manager we are never going to be anything more than average and I find that more disappointing than anything.

Has done an excellent job so far although not bringing in another CB has been the one blemish on his track record so far. It's the manager's failing to get the best out of them that's the problem.

Said it before, it was bordering on negligence to approach this season with two senior centre backs.

Running around on deadline day trying to get Rojo was embarrassing. A deadline should have been given to Zouma and Chelsea and if they don't want to accept the offer then just move on.

Last summer's signings

Bernard : Would easily get 25 million plus for

Digne : Bought for 20 million, probably worth 30 million plus now

Richarlison : Paid roughly 35 million for ( add ons will increase that, but, apart from appearances, I doubt we've hit any ), worth 50 million plus now. You might not pay that, but plenty would

Mina : Paid about 27 million for. Being injured last season means he hasn't had time to settle yet, so maybe he's only worth 20 million plus now

Net result : At least 50 million up

On Delph. We paid buttons for him. If he plays 25 to 30 games this season, then he'll be worth 20 million plus at the end of the season. If he doesn't, then he'll still be worth pretty much what we paid for him.

We got Gomes on the cheap. He has flaws, but he's worth 30 million plus.

It's too early to tell on Kean and Gbamin. Iwobi is probably going to be worth roughly what we paid for him, but if Silva can work on his weaknesses then his value will increase as well.

Brands has made mistakes this summer, but, financially, he's doing just fine.

None of your figures take into account wages. If we had to offer Bernard mega wages to sign on a free, that's going to be taken into account by anyone wishing to buy him. That's why so many of the players who are no longer in the managers plans are still on the books. We've paid a premium to get them here and no-one else will match it, regardless of transfer fee.
