It takes its toll, alright. It's a bereavement, pure and simple.
It really is bereavement.

People that say its 'only a dog/cat/rabbit/whatever' are touched in the head. If something has been in your life and relies on you for its day to day your obviously emotionally attached to it.

My big old Rott deteriorated fast with bowel cancer a couple of years back and even though I have other rescue Rotts and GSDs I still miss him all the time.

Pics below in his prime (57 kg) and then our last picture together just before he went to sleep less than 4 months later.

What a beautiful dog! Can't do a smiley and a sad face at the same time on the forum button ... So ?? Still breaks my heart thinking about our Jem.

Time to start putting the owners down aswell as the dog when a child is killed by the dangerous beast that its parents have brought into the home. That would make people think twice about doing it.

I have said for decades that owners should have to pass tests as to suitability for owning a dog - don't get me started on having children.

Getting a licence by walking into the post office or online is ridiculous.

Dogs need constant attention. I have been caught out , I know. This GSD pup is driving me crazy, and I know the neighbour's lambs are now out.

She thinks everything is a game. Lambs panic and break their necks running.

As I am now retired at least I can keep an eye on her. However, she is the most destructive dog I have ever owned in nearly fifty years.

Rubbish mate, they didn't need to suffer at all if they just concentrated on their 17 month old instead of a vicious animal. I WOULD JAIL THE BOTH OF THEM.
Let's be honest. None of us know anything other that the tragic consequences. It seems unbelievably stupid to take anything other than a puppy into a home with a toddler but I'm not sure what jailing them would do other than cost us all more money. The poor child has paid the ultimate price of this stupidity and the parents will have to live with it every day for the rest of their lives. It's all just awful.

Let’s not turn this thread into what usually happens when something like this happens.
Tragic event, but this thread isn’t for the attention seeking WUMS I would suggest ?
Start one in the current affairs thread, and let it get locked after a few days.
Some cracking pics and memories of posters dogs in here.

As posted before our first GSD we got when our daughter was two and a half. They absolutely loved each other. If a dog attacks a child there is something seriously wrong with the owner or the breed.

I wouldn't trust smaller yappy dogs with young children.

Probably owner - breed doesn't really matter that much if you've brought up the animal to be friendly and sociable. One of our current neighbours has a silky black cane corso, massive and supposedly aggressive breed.... It's a jellyfish boy, honestly. Just comes up to you and demands to be petted, he's the same with other dogs and with kids as well. Scary until proven harmless lol

A friend had a pitbull that looked evil, but was the nicest soul as well...

100% the owners.

I am inclined to agree. One should have to pass a test before getting a dog licence.

That is really tragic though
