...Graham Sharp is another who was criticised for lack of goals, but his return was reasonable and the likes of Lineker, Gray, Cottee and Heath all valued his contribution.

I do think DCL should be exploiting his aerial ability. At the moment he appears to concentrate on getting his head on the ball, as opposed to heading the ball. There was that miss at Hull when he first broke into the team, when the pictures from behind the goal showed his eyes were closed when he headed the ball.

He’s a beast in the air, he had a chance at Palace but directed his header wide of the post. He needs to do better in those situations. He needs to believe.

this is the sort of advice you give your struggling 13 year old on a sunday … not a Premier league player , trying to cut it at the top !

I just acknowledged he done well in that period. But let's not make it out something it wasn't, he didn't win us those games, he just done a decent job running around and pulling defenders out of position allowing others to exploit, it's hardly a unique trait to have.

All good doing that again the good teams but where was he against the teams we struggled to break down when you need a goalscorer. Fulham and palace away to name a couple ( results which ultimately cost us 7th and Europe)

At 22 you should be able to finish chances. He incapable, is that something he can pick up? I doubt it
goalscorers in the traditional sense get smothered in them kind of games mate, it is the players who can do something different in the final third who help with that hence a failed move for Zaha or the signing of Iwobi who can run with the ball. the contradiction you make is saying DCL runs about pulling players out position but asking where he was against teams who are rigid & try & be hard to break down. He is obviously trying to stretch them. If Sigurdsson buries that chance against Palace we aren't moaning about DCL. What I agree with is the obvious need for more goals in the side wether that is from DCL, Kean or someone else

...scoring goals is partly state of mind, even goalscorers have periods where they are on their heels rather than anticipating chances. Rather than concentrating on winning headers (which I think DCL does) he should be attacking the ball in belief of scoring.

I watched enough of him to see he is capable of creating the odd chance for himself, thing is , hes just not accurate enough in the air or with either foot.

but zaha scores goals and wins pen after pen, DCL does neither

you can do both, you can run channels as well as score goals, the reason DCL doesn't score goals is because he doesn't have that strikers instinct ( as well as being a terrible finisher like )

Zaha is years further in his career mate. By the way I am not disputing he needs to increase the goal tally but he is not [Poor language removed] like is being said

At 22 he’s doing pretty well being a regular for a good PL side. There aren’t many 22 year olds who are capable of doing so and not that many that are that prolific at his age.

Even Sterling for example wasn’t hitting great numbers but suddenly dominated the league - going from 7 goals to 18 goals in a season.

I’m not saying DCL is or will become anywhere near his level (in my opinion Sterling is top 5 best players in the league at least), but it shows that goalscoring is something that can improve.

What about the likes of Richarlison, Bernard, Gylfi who also failed to make the difference against those teams you mention? Or is he solely the reason for not winning those matches?

How much time do you give, is this a make or break season.
I reckon the goals will come, he established himself in Silva's team after Christmas, did well so deserves the chance.

It’s hard to say how long you give him. The reality is that we probably won’t considering buying another striker until next summer and we’re only one game in.

With proper competition (Kean) they can help each other hit the next level. Anything less than 10 league goals each this season would be disappointing in my view.

Why are you comparing wingers to a striker

Why are you comparing wingers to a striker

Comparing a young player who is criticised for their finishing with another young player who was criticised for their finishing.

Unless I’m missing all these examples of 22 year olds who are banging in 15-20 a season in the Premier League, I don’t understand why it’s so fashionable to not rate DCL.

I think the problem is that we don't see a point in time where DCL will be banging in 15-20 goals a season.
