Very good post mate.
I think the problem here is that a lot of our fans see things very much as black and white. Players are either good enough to start every game for Everton now, or they aren't good enough to play for us at all. There are no grey/middle area's and it's a problem you will ultimately see replicated in every single one of our young player's threads. DCL is not an exception. Whilst this may appear a very blinkered outlook to many of us, it doesn't make them any less an Everton supporter.
Conversely there are a very small number of fans who think DCL is ready now to lead our line. I don't think this is a view held by many but unfortunately it gives the "haters" on here the ammunition to make some of the posts we see all too regularly.
The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle. DCL is a young promising player who doesn't yet score enough goals to be considered first choice striker for a team of Everton's ambition. He has however improved many aspects of his game over the last couple of seasons, and he is very effective for us in certain types of game, such as where the plan is to press from the front, and when we play a counter attacking game with a lone striker to occupy their defenders. In this regard he played a major part in the teams performances at the end of last season when we secured some very good results against 5 of the top 6.
The bottom line at the moment though is that he doesn't have enough goals in his game. In fact you could reasonably argue that he is poor in front of goal, often lacking composure and movement and seemingly unable to anticipate crosses on from wide positions. Can he improve in this area?, most certainly in my opinion, although he does lack that natural instinct that singles out the best goal scorers. Will he improve in this area is a much harder question to answer though. For me, he adds so much more to the team he doesn't need to be prolific, but at the moment he misses 3 out of 4 clear cut chances, and if he can just get this to 1 in 2 he will double his goal tally and justify his place in the squad going forward.
At 22, he is still young enough to persevere with for another couple of seasons. If he can get his seasonal tally upto around 11/12, then that will do for me. I do however believe we will always need another more natural goal scorer in the squad to start games we expect to dominate, and hopefully the boy Kean will provide that role for at least the next few seasons. I fear though that, whatever he does in the future, he would probably need to score over 20 every season for the haters to stop hating. And I just can't see that happening.
