What if it's a purple patch?

That happens too.

DCL is largely the exception, not the rule.

Assuming he goes on to become the finished article and this isn't a purple patch, most top level strikers are accomplished regulars before the age of 22.

DCL is the exception? Players generally don’t improve from the age of 19 onwards? Interesting take. He also was an accomplished regular before the age of 22.

That's not what I said, unsurprisingly dramatic of you Michael.

DCL is the exception in that he's been absolutely pants up until the age of 22/23. There's been very little indication he would turn into an International regular. He's gone from a 1 in 5 striker over the last 2 years to a 1 in 2 this season. That's not unheard of, but it's rare.

Most top strikers you care to name, most were accomplished regulars at club level, scoring at a rate of at least 1 in 3 or so by the time they were 19/20 ala Haaland, Kane, Suarez, Lewandowski, Aguero, Lukaku, Higuain, Dzeko etc.. Like I said, it could be that Dom is a late bloomer, that he's finally matured and we're now seeing 'the real Dom'.

Alternatively, it could be that it's just a purple patch, that he's still an average striker in a good run of form, which can happen.

Naturally, we all hope it's the former. It all depends on if he continues this form or not throughout next season.

Well that is what I said, that players tend to improve from the age of 19, and you took it and twisted it yourself because you're a really, really strange man.

No it's not what you said. You said only weirdo's would write Kean off and we should all learn a lesson from DCL.

My response was that DCL hasn't really taught us a lesson yet, because although he's having a good season, that's not really an accomplishment in the grand scheme of things, given the number of other English strikers who've scored similar numbers of goals in a season. Therefore it's perfectly acceptable to be alarmed by (or even 'write off' if people choose to) a player who's scored once in 22 games.

DCL needs to be consistent. Christ, even the likes of Chris Sutton, Julian Joachim, Marcus Stewart and Grant Holt have knocked in the high teens in a single season. It's not 'proof of his arrival'. That will come when he does this again next season, hopefully. For Kean, it's about making that breakthrough in the 1st place.

Who was the last Everton striker to score 13 goals in a season?

So we're going to wait until half way through next season before we're allowed to say if DCL has improved or not?

All the paragraphs in the world won't be able to make you not sound like a complete contrarian tit on this one unfortunately mate. Just accept you're going to get laughed at again if Kean comes good.

No, he has improved, I don't think there's a question about that at all is there? Nobody is disputing he's improved.

My suggestion, my argument, is that people should hold off proclaiming him the next messiah and just temper that adulation until he's done it on a consistent basis.

If people want to go off and get excited, by all means, I just think it's a little early for "the next Harry Kane" shouts i've seen, and it could yet lead to more disappointment.

On your 2nd point, I'm quite happy with that, because if you're right and i'm wrong, then Kean plays for my club and is a top striker, so I still win.

Are you going to get laughed at if Kean doesn't come good, mate?

How did I proclaim him the next messiah? I simply stated that he'd improved from the age of 19, which he has and you've just acknowledged it. So why couldn't Kean improve?

Really happy how good he’s looking and how he’s gliding about the pitch and composing himself toile a top player. However, until he does it next season too I will still have a niggling doubt in the back of my head as I was severely burnt by Jelavic. The way he’s looking as a player and not just the goals he’s scoring suggests he will continue it though which is great.

Good on the lad, no doubt he had ability, it was essential he added goals and he has started that, breath of fresh air seeing some young lad come from nowhere and start to make a name for himself.
