Very much agree the changes didn't really provide much impetus or added creativity.

The system looked staid too. Solid, but had run out of ideas second half.

Still, I guess Southgate just decided to play the tournament long game. Get the point, put his team in a strong position to qualify, accept a poor performance and move on.

England do look short of goals at the moment. Just been 1-0 wins against modest opposition the last few games (yesterday aside). Its all that is needed, of course, but I don't feel like they can turn a deficit around against quality. Especially if Kane is not on song.

Maybe Southgate takes the handbrakes off in the knockouts, when needed?

Good ness was a handbrake on ! Does that explain a lot?

Unless the game plan changes to start getting crosses into the box there was no point bringing DCL on.

Kane even if he’s having a poor game can always produce a moment of brilliance which DCL can’t. So I understand why Kane was kept on.

For DCLs confidence it’s probably better he isn’t introduced in those type of games. Southgate doesn’t have a plan B.

…I don’t get this, forward play is not only about scoring a goal.

I accept the ‘moment of brilliance’ point, but DCL coming on would’ve been far more competitive against those CBs. His aerial, physical & running power would certainly have offered more than Kane & got them out of their comfort zone.

its not only about a goalscoring threat, England get runners along and beyond the main striker & DCL might have made things easier for them.

It was if Southgate had read Carlos handbook of football -

Play tippy tappy plus backwards using Pickford as the main passer of the ball -

Substitutes - take your most productive player of the game off in Foden ....

Then send on a midfielder which would have linked up well with Foden in Grealish....

Then take of the rubbish Kane, who looks crocked - with a winger who has been off form ......

Seen it all before watching Carlo with our players - he played for the 0-0 ......

DCL would have been the better substitute if we wanted a win ....

I don’t think DCL would have had much luck last night or made a difference, we was so boring going forward. I just think Southgate got it completely wrong from the start.

For DCL to have an impact for England I think we need to set up differently to suit his style.

This isn’t a post against DCL I’m just stating I understand why he kept Kane on.

Kane should not start whatever formation Soutgate uses -DCL or not your right about the set-up same one poor DCL has suffered for 2/3rds of the season two defensive midfielders..... lack of creativity - Kane looked crocked ankles problems he finished the season with at Spurs -

There will definitely be games that Dom is more suited for. The issue is that doesn’t matter if the creativity is absolute stankarse as it is for England. Tactically they are bad, creatively they are bad and their lineups are poor. Too many issues with Southgate in general
