2022/23 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

I know, you stated you wanted his injury to be bad enough to keep him out for the season. Which is what I said, so we can leave that now.

Personally, I do not believe buying another striker in January is dependent on whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin is injured or not, but more his recent injury record and the new stadium. I believe Frank Lampard will not want to pin his hopes on Dominic Calvert-Lewin avoiding injury and finding consistent goalscoring form once he returns, and Farhad Moshiri will not want to risk us losing our Premier League status having invested so much money in the new stadium. To me, they both know we need to buy a forward in January and will do all they can to make it happen.
He did exactly that in the summer.

That was terrible managerial judgenment. He should have ensure the moment Richarlison left that a suitable replacement was brought in.

It could be the decision that turns us from a PL club into a Championship one.

Yes, Frank Lampard made a call and it's not turning out well for him. This is why I feel he will be desperate to bring someone in who can do a job for us up front. But any forward we bring in during January needs to be done so with the view that he is going to be our main striker, not another bench warmer waiting in the wings to play the last thirty or so minutes of games, or only getting a proper chance when there is an injury or suspension.

How did we add depth if we replaced someone with a worse player?

You should never spend money on players with the idea that they’ll be a backup. That’s exactly how you get progressively worse year upon year. Every player should be signed with the intention that they’ll improve the first team in some way.
Agree! And then the player they replace can be the squad player!

Calvert Lewin should be treated in Yerry Mina territory for me!
It must be gutting for the lad he cant get a decent break in terms of any lasting fitness (or whisper it...form)
Its obvious he's a good professional, takes his job seriously and has worked very hard to get to were he has, every manager he has had here has loked him one way or another over a period of time were we have had a ridiculous amount of player turnover.

But we need to get someone in to replace him unfortunately, in the long run it will be better for both us and him as a footballer

He can challenge them to it; but it's like asking a dog to ride a bike.

What's that you were saying :D

….probably safer to say it was a poor decision by Thelwell/Lampard. i presume they were both in agreement to ‘risk’ going with a fragile DCL, although maybe one was more in favour of this strategy than the other.

i totally agree it verged on incompetence from the pair.

Clubs cant go spending 30-40m, just in case.

Couldn’t agree more, we’ve signed objectively crap players, worse and less productive than the players they replaced - from what was already a mid table squad - and obviously got worse.

Every time it’s happened though people try to rationalise the signing as being a decent squad player, good backup. That’s fine if you have a good starting eleven and all you need is backup. It’s a really bad idea if you have a poor starting eleven and need to replace first team quality starters.

I’m sick of it, same every time we sign someone clearly not good enough. Andros Townsend - he’ll do a job, good squad player, Demari Gray - cheap, he’ll be a good squad player, Rondon - he’s [Poor language removed] but free and he’ll be backup, McNeil, Maupay etc.

It’s pathetic

We need a striker who's reliable in terms of getting on the pitch and a playmaker who can provide an alternative to our predictable wide attacking play, and also chip in with a few goals.

If we dont get them we are in serious trouble.

IMO we are more in danger now than when we were at a later stage under Benitez, because we always had a player like Richarlison who could be relied on to get goals and do a trojan job tracking opponents.

Absolutely classic Everton though that a striker who had very few problems before gets one injury and it leads to a succession of injuries that keeps him out for best part of two seasons just as he’s finally hit top form after we put years of development into him. It’s just peak Everton. We can’t sell him for the price we could have done and we’re left with a crock.

I think this would make a very good thread discussion:

Everton that

And

Peak Everton
