2022/23 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

It's not about that though. It's the way he takes the pressure off of the back 4 by holding up the ball or allowing them to go long to him.

No one else does this and so he is integral to a style of play that suits our personnel far better. McNeil, Iwobi and Doucoure are far better players with him in the team than without him.

Im not even convinced its calvert lewin. Though he does do it. Its just a half decent player up front to do that role. Marcus bent did it brilliantly under moyes. Olly watkins does it well at villa.
Wether we could have got anyone in good enough to do the role, the fact the club let the whole season run its course relying on calvert lewin to be fit was lets just say amateurish.

Yeah good point, he leads and defends from the front.

Completely agree. No excuse for it. France won the World Cup in 98 with a chap called Stefan Guivarch up front on his own. He didn't really score goals (ask Newcastle fans), buy he enabled a team style of play and other players to perform.

Greece also won the Euros in 2004 without a goalscoring striker too. More of a target man 'enabler' type of striker in Charisteas.

We need that type of player to get the best of our widemen and midfielders...

Interesting point, he certainly has a presence no other forward has

I can remember the second halfs v Leeds and Brentford, 1-0 up and just booting the ball upfield for Gray to attempt to chase which resulted in hardly any possession or decent attacks.

Can see the same on Sunday even if in the lead. Personally I'd start with Simms, it's a gamble but he scored at Chelsea and not like he was ever going to do much in his two starts so last days can throw up unlikely heroes and that would certainly be a story.
