2024/25 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

And that's half the problem, not all of them are working that hard.

But again, dcl certainly isn't.
I'm not defending him but equally I don't think he deserves singling out because the whole team look awful and what exactly can the striker do if the ball spends most of the time around our own box with lads that can't pass when they get it?

Every player looks poor but most of the blame lies with the manager imo because he clearly hasn't prepared them for the start of the season properly

Haha now we are showing "effort" stats to try and make an argument for a player who can't score. I expect effort from the midfield, I expect goals from the striker.

Had one good season, I don't care if he jumps well or whatever other nonsense people trot out to try and justify him being a starter. Should have sold after his good season under Carlo. And enough of the no service garbage. Make your own chances like a lot of the other people in his position do.

Nowhere is it actually explained here what qualifies as a "run challenging the backline".

The expected passing stat is bizarre.

There is a metric that calculates the number of passing options available when a player receives possession. Calvert-Lewin averages 0.96 options when he gets the ball - one of only four players to start both games averaging fewer than a single passing option.

No wonder his expected pass completion rate, calculating the difficulty of his passes, is just 57.3 per cent. That is the lowest of any Premier League player

Most of the time when he has the ball only Pickford is on, everybody else is hiding like the utter cowards they are.

I don't think it's that bizarre. It just means the ball is hoofed to him and there's no one around for him to knock it on to, or the ball is played into the channel for him with no one to pass to. It seems like a statistic that passes the eye test, at least to me.

He receives the ball with no one around him and constantly makes runs that no one pays attention to. That sums up a lot of the first two matches to me.

The question is what will he do with other players around him and having the ball played to him. Based on last season's scoring record, he won't be doing much.

That definitely happens but I question how much of it is down to everyone else hiding. He has a habit of running down blind alleys without looking up.

Some of that is his own fault with the runs he makes out wide constantly and never stopping to look up for a pass until he's ran the length of the pitch and has nobody to pass to.

He seems to always be running wide and never centrally. That's probably a choice forced on him because we don't have anyone who can thread a ball through since James and Gylfi left.

He might be making a lot of runs but are they good runs?

I see him out wide in possession on how own far too much. That's because we hoof it up there and he's the only one with the pace to chase it but as a consequence of that he's left isolated on his own with nobody to pass to because they're all glacially slow behind him.

Theyre not going to be inventing stats to try to make Calvert Lewin look good though are they?

The reality is, it shows Calvert Lewin is working hard, and his detractors are again very confused. But that's nothing new.
