A bit premature to slate the lad.

I recall two Everton players who were next to mediocre when they first played for us.

Names of Kendall and Sharpe.

They got better, though...

Fair enough, but in more recent times it just seems to me you know quite quickly what kind of impact a youngster is going to have. Even with Davies you can see he's got something about him.

Koeman obviously sees something in Lewin though so hopefully we'll see that manifest itself soon.

Think Koeman's judgement is somewhat suspect! Prefer to go on what I've seen and Unsworth's judgement (which seems to be fairly accurate).

...football is about opinion. It's a massive step up to Premier League but I thought the bench for the Derby would've looked better balanced with Dowell on it (once Deulofeu was omitted). We won't always agree with the managers judgement but I'm content to let him get on with it at the moment.

Some of the comments on here are bizarre, maybe acceptable if you were at the match and saw that "sitter" only once in real time. He was was clearly nudged off position by a more experienced defender, wasn't a foul just good defending which at this age DCL doesn't have the physicality to cope with. You can see it quite clearly in replays, his body and head are in a diagonal line and he heads it the way he's facing . It's a good chance missed , and you'd expect an experienced PL striker to have got it on target despite the defender, but he's not an experienced PL striker and it wasn't as clear cut a sitter as The opportunity Ross scored from.
DCL is actually quite a good header of a ball ..... for his age. The evidence is there in the goals he's scored particularly his first for England U20 and the header he won and flicked on after coming on. But he's too easily dominated by experienced defenders e.g. Sakho, I think, very much had him in his picket for the RS in the U23s derby.
He's very much a work in progress , and I would say there are better young strikers than him around e.g Tammy Abrahams the Chelsea product at Bristol City, but very very few get game time in the PL at 19 these days. The reason he's getting game time is we just don't have anyone else in his role to support Lukaku, the closest are Niasse and Kone and to answer another question hes without doubt the best young striker we've got in the U23s.

What I'm saying is Rooney was way ahead of him at 16 than his is now nearly 20. When comparing how good he is likely to be
Doesn't mean rooney would have scored,as you said mate the lad has had 3x15mins at least give him a couple of games. We know he's not going to be as good as rooney at his age.

How angry I was at him yesterday evening for that miss in the 90th... but it would be childish to put all the blame on him, the whole team bottled it up yesterday, we didn't deserve the win with that many misplaced passes.

...they all miss sitters, Matey. That was more his position last night, he's a technically good back to goal striker who is decent in the air (despite the missed chance). Reminds me a little of Graeme Sharp when he first came to Everton, I doubt he'll ever be a prolific goal scorer but he's got good movement and shape about him, especially when he bulks up.
I know mate...I was a little 'devil's advocating' in my post...
...just for the crack, like.

I did feel sorry for him he moved his head to the ball just seconds too quick eager to score - he would have been a hero played his part in our equaliser though he will learn from that - hard to judge when he came on in a cameo role if a more experienced header of the ball had been there ?
The lad must have talent as he was there to head the ball look at it that way!

He should get more time on the pitch but when he's been on so far he's been mostly ineffective and had very little influence. Doesn't have that immediate "oi, look at that lad go" factor that Davies or even Holgate has at the moment.

Think the lad has something about him. Played an important role in the lead up to our second goal. Was a bad miss but was good to see that he was able to get in between two seasoned pl centre halfs and get the chance in the first place. Have to ask yourself why the chance fell to him and not Lukaku? The boy has very good positional play from what I have seen for the u23s.
The people calling for dowell to play haven't seen much of him this year I presume. Definitely deserved a shot at the end of last season but hasn't been at that level this year and has drifted in and out of games. In terms of ability to play pl football both dowell and Walsh 'have it' but don't think either are quite ready yet.

The lad looks a bit over awed at the moment by playing in the PL which is understandable. There aren't many young players with the poise of Stones or Davies.
Koman must see something him which is promising.

Exactly, it shouldn't have boiled down to expecting a kid to rescue the game for us in the last minute.

My first impression (and subsequent 2nd and 3rd impressions) was that he seemed a bit overwhelmed and perhaps a bit nervous to get involved.
That being said, I definitely think that particular aspect has improved slightly every time he has come on and you could see him get into it a bit more against Hull.

It's not really a criticism to be honest, as he is still young. He hasn't really "seized the moment" as the likes of Rashford did at Man U, or even Davies and Holgate have here. But I guess it's hard to come on and have great impact when even the better senior players aren't playing particularly well.

I'd like to see him involved regularly for the rest of the season because I think he'll become more confident with every minute and hopefully we'll start to see what Koeman etc is seeing in training.
