2017/18 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Think he should be judged more on his overall effort and performance as he settles into the first team squad environment, given the chances of him being given the primary striking role are likely to be few and far between.

He's young, eager, keen and promising, let's not hang a millstone of goals to games round his neck just yet.

For now, let's enjoy his contribution and if/when he scores look on his goals as something of a bonus. ;)

Why should he?

Why does this striker get a pass on his goals to games ratio, when the very same people praising him here, pull up other strikers stats?

Strikers that we were linked to in Giroud, Raul Jimenez etc....

Not a lot of posters wanted Giroud weeks ago because we'd of used him as a target man, pumping it long, were concerned that his goals to games wasn't that impressive. But because Calvert-Lewin is a young blue, he gets a pass on the above.

No. If he's a striker, he'll be judged on his goals/games ratio.

Whoa, think we need to put things in perspective here mate. This time last year DCL had only just joined up with England U20s and struggled to get game time ahead of the likes of established U20s s like Armstrong, Roberts, Issie Brown, Solanke. He did remarkably well at the U 20 World Cup and deserves all the praise he's been given , he's worked hard to earn it. But his next step is to establish himself in the u21 s, throw in Tammy Abrahams now into that mix . I'm not even sure if he'll start tonight , maybe Abrahams will, then he has to establish himself as a goalscorer at PL level , and arguably Rashford is ahead of him in that category, with again competition from Abrahams . At 20 he's still learning , and making rapid strides and getting lots of praise from pundits too but he's far from the finished article yet.

This. The lad is an absolute mile away from the national team.

Yes and no. It depends on what he's asked to do. If he's asked to a job by Koeman and he executes it well, he should be judged on that. He may end up being a guy who hold it up and makes little passes to our midfielders or Sandro who then score the goals.

This guy is essentially a rapid Fellaini that can't finish too well and is still a bit lightweight. If he ever fills out and becomes a slotter, he could be the next 25 goal scorer in this league. You just don't see many players with that height, speed and body control.

Nobody is giving him a free ride but scoring from the touch line where Ron often posts him is not easy. If played as a striker then it becomes one metric. If Spurs had been as harsh with Kane as you want to be with this lad then they wouldn't have a £100m striker leading the line

Re: the goals are how you measure strikers...funny how that wasn't the only criteria our fans applied to Rom. Working hard, pressing, making the right runs, hold up play, vision...all things you can judge a striker on besides goals. Obviously you don't want one who can't take their chances, but it's more nuanced that just how many goals they score because that is also dependent on the system and the players around them.
