2017/18 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

I get how we need a scapegoat but he was good. Linked well, won his headers, set up a great chance for Rooney, tracked back.

What more do they want from a 20-year old striker playing out wide.

I don't know Nymz. I like him and it's painfully obvious he isn't a winger but he's done in some books already.

Which is absolutely mad.

Tried his best. Puts the effort in but he's not talented enough.

Sandro on the pitch for a few minutes underlined how far off PL level he is.

Sandro did a job through the middle when he came on tonight mate. He basically replaced an ineffective Rooney, but Koeman didn't want to drag Rooney off ( who, to be fair, is still well capable of a bit of magic ), so Calvert-Lewin was sacrificed.

Just finished watching the game and confused why he's getting so much stick? Thought he had a great game playing in the wrong position.
A great game?! I thought he did ok, but I still think he lacks the skill set to play the role he's occupying. He works hard and is neat and tidy, but he offers very little threat, and in our set up that just isn't good enough. I feel sorry for him, he just isn't comfortable out there.

Probably much the same that I do mate, and I freely admit that it's not a widely held view on the forum, that the lad has all-round ability and can do a job simply and effectively without looking flashy.

Granted, he doesn't exactly shine playing out wide, but, for whatever reason, I'm seeing positives that very few others seem to see. To be honest, if you think he was one of the worst players on the pitch then that just leaves me scratching my head and wondering why we're so far apart on judging the lad. But it'd be terminally dull if everyone agreed on everything !
I think we probably agree that he is definitely not a winger so he must play through the middle. Is he good enough to do this? I don't think there is any evidence to say that he can, but yet Koeman perseveres with him while sideling Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny. That's what I find baffling.

Yeh he's not a winger but his attitude is spot on and I wouldn't call him a weak link. Set up the best chance in the first half and could have been a threat late game from all the crosses.

DCL did reasonly well tonight but he's clearly no winger. He's never going to whip balls in from the touch line after beating the defender.
He should not be starting competitive games yet. Sandro should have started and we were lucky to get away with it. RK clearly favours DCL and it could cost the club. Play him when there's less at stake.

Why is the last point relevant? It's not like DCL is keeping them out of the team. Competition for their places is tougher than his currently.

He tried to be a little too fancy on several occasions and missed several easy passes, but he was far from the worst tonight. I really think it's more nerves with him than anything. Puts a shift in and reminds me of Fellaini a bit in the air- good with ball control.

Tried his best and shows glimpses of being a decent target man in the future. But Ron for the love of God stop playing him wide!!

Think most people forget he jumped from League 1 games with Northampton to the PL playing out of position. The step up is enormous and he already looks better with experience.
