The two fastest footballers in the Premier League last weekend wore Royal Blue.

It will surprise no-one that the speediest player in action at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday was Theo Walcott, who clocked 21.00mph during the Toffees' 2-1 triumph against Stoke.

But the identity of the player only fractionally slower than Walcott may raise one or two eyebrows.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who came on as a 53rd minute substitute for Tom Davies, was almost as speedy as Walcott, clocking a top speed of 20.94mph.

Third in the speed stakes over the weekend was Crystal Palace defender Patrick Van Aanholt who recorded 20.87mph.

But all three have a little way to go to catch the Premier League's top pace ace this season.

Manchester City's Leroy Sane is the league's fastest footballer this season with a lightning fast 22.05mph.

Now 35, he may not quite boast the turn of pace he once did, but Phil Jagielka can still shift.

In November 2014/15 Jagielka was named the Premier League's fastest player up until that stage of the season.

The defender hit a top speed of 35.99 kilometres per hour - or 22.36 miles per hour - against Leicester on the opening day of the season.

Second quickest was Leicester defender Rickie De Laet (22.33 mph), while Joe Ledley of Crystal Palace was third (22.31 mph).

Calvert-Lewin's ability to shift shouldn't really have come as a surprise.

The young striker made a Premier League top 10 of flying machines earlier this season - with top speeds given in kilometres per hour this time.

=10. Salomon Rondon (West Brom) - 34.56 km per hour

=10. Romelu Lukaku (Man United) - 34.56 km per hour

=10. N'Golo Kante (Chelsea) - 34.56 km per hour

9. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton) - 34.62 km per hour

8. Jamie Vardy (Leicester) - 34.65 km per hour

7. Paul Pogba (Man United) - 34.68 km per hour

6. Joshua King (Bournemouth) - 34.70 km per hour

5. Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth) - 34.79 km per hour

4. Sadio Mane (Liverpool) - 34.84 km per hour

3. Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal) - 35.11 km per hour

2. Kiko Femenia (Watford) - 35.12 km per hour

1. Kyle Walker (Man City) - 35.16 km per hour

Beardsley is my favourite prem player ever and he wasn't prolific. He was an awsome player and whoever he played with (apart from when at Everton) was constantly at the top of the scoring charts

I think it's a little archaic to think a striker has to score a ton of goals. Sure if they're our sole forward but he isn't.
Beardsley wasn't prolific in the sense that someone like Lineker or Rush was, but he regularly got 15 league goals a season. I don't think anybody would be complaining if DCL managed that sort of record.

Obviously your striker doesn't need to score 30 every year, but you're not going to achieve much if he can't get 10. DCL has got plenty of time to improve, but he can't just score the odd header once a month for long if he wants to be a PL striker, simple as that really.

Yeh it's a fair opinion. I think if he can get 10 per season and 5-10 assists then I'll find him a valuable player for the squad.

He may never get any better than this in which case I'll admit defeat and say I was wrong about him.

Agreed . I don't think he will ever be a decent prem striker

You don't know that. He might of course. But I once thought the same about Harry Kane having watched a lot of him on loan at Leicester.

For every Harry Kane there are a thousand DCL. His finishing and shooting simply aren't there. His allround game isn't good enough yet but I don't really want to play him for the next two years just to find out he's not good enough

Which is why he needs a loan. Possibly two loans.

Exactly what were you expecting from him leading the line for most of the season in his first ever full season in the top flight because we forgot to replace Lukaku?!

See I don't know how you can say this with any sense of authority. There are probably only 3 other strikers in the same age group getting anything like regular game time in the premier this season and none of them have goalscoring/assist stats significantly better than DCL. And 2 of those are probably nailed on to be in the English and French world cup squads this summer

I agree that he still has a lot to learn, especially in the goal scoring front, but at this stage in his development I'm very happy with him. He has already improved tremendously since his debut last season, and as team performance improves I expect the service to him and the other front players to improve too. He is not yet good enough to be our main striker, but in fairness has never shirked when landed that responsibility, and that's all you can (reasonably) ask at this stage.

If he can get to the level where he is regularly giving you 10-15 goals a season, coupled with a good number of assists, I think that would be perfectly acceptable as a second striker (which I think he will be).

Think this is fair comment mate.

Whilst he's not ready yet to play week in week out in the premier, I don't see the point in sending him on loan to a lower league club. For me he would be better staying as our third choice striker, training and playing with better players, getting valuable game time from the bench and starting some of our easier cup games (which is what his role should have been this season if our club management did their jobs properly). To be sent to the Championship having played so much in the premier this season would just put his development back 2/3 years IMO.

I think he will. Not sure what it is. Possibly dumb hope. But we've seen young lads struggle loads then get good. But a loan to a half decent team is a must for his progression.
Personally don't see the point in that.

He has progressed a lot playing for Everton and that's exactly what he needs. He was just overplayed and over-relied on.

He's had a great season in numbers, but still has a lot to learn.

He's done that this season and it's his first proper season. He's only going to be that or better.

He's a fine player to have in the squad imo

Agree.. He has come on leaps & bounds from last year, most improved player imo...

He has all the attributes required strength, pace, heading ability & goalscoring...

He has also got a great attitude & if he shows the same improvement over the next few years we will have a top striker on our hands...
