In his first 5 seasons Alan Shearer played 118 games and scored 23 goals(First Division with Southampton), he didn't turn out to shabby did he,imagine these days he'd be sent to the knackers yard for stats like that.

Thierry Henry played 105 and scored 20 for Monaco in his first 5 seasons...The list goes on.

It's too early too write this lad off
You realise you are now going to be accused of comparing him to Shearer and Henry.

Of course you are. You never gave Barkley any credit for anything and you are exactly the same with DCL. You're writing a player off who's just turned 21 a couple of weeks ago. A striker who is first choice for England U21s.

It's horrible to see how some our fans treat our young players. Luckily you only ever get to do it on an internet site but sadly there's loads like you that go the match too.

Never give barkley credit? How can you give credit to someone that liertally can't be arsed to work hard and not even attempt to get the ball back? Someone who was running his contract down. And not giving DCL credit? I have said that he has a great attitude and seems a decent lad that wants to improve and wants to do well here. Problem is he's not good enough, just like niasse... I have immense respect for niasse to fight the way he did to get into the squad again... but he's still not good enough in his allround play. If DCL had the scoring knack of niasse or was at least giving keepers into good saves then you would have a case to say he could develop into a decent goal scorer. Fact is that he isn't and he misses sitters consistently and he misses the target when he does.

Yet he's on par with our £45mill man for assists and goals having been played on the wing, lone striker, and wing back.

Our fans are always hypercritical of our young players, expecting more from them, and it masks the fact that most of the senior players need to be ousted way before the kids do.

Been like that for years and is a huge problem

I just don't see anything that stands out and catches my eye . Lookman shows a very good touch and turn of pace and has shown he can hit a ball from distance as well as having very quick feet and is good in tight areas. That caught my eye and shows potential . DCL shows he can't hit the target and doesn't have conposure. He can run fast in a straight line and is very fit and can challenge in the air ( only off GK kicks tho) but these traits aren't hard to find and don't really stand out as being good enough to balance out the weak parts of his game. Cahill wasn't a technically good player and he got by on determination , attitude, and heart , all qualities which DCL has. Cahill wouldn't have made it with just these tho, he was immense in the air both defending and attacking and scored goals in tight games (like yesterday) DCL doesn't have the same knack and tbh not many do... it's rare and costs a lot of money. DCL doesn't have anything that stands out IMO , if he were to play for westham for example and we wanted to buy him , how much would you spend? 5m? 10m? Because that's what I would class him as... he is a Watford , stoke level player or at least he will be eventually. He will be a prem player but not a good one

Rooneys goal record for us when he was young wasn't good so statistically DCL might not be very different... but you can see other parts of their game and everyone knew Rooney was going to the top... point is you have to spot something special in a young player and i can't see anything special in DCL, Barkley had that something special , the ability to carry the ball, shoot from distance with both feet ... those were his special attributes that made him worth developing ... and even he didn't improve enough.

You do realise that he has just used both shearer and Henry as a comparison don't you?
Thats exactly what the guy didnt do. He put forward 2 names as exampes of players who didnt have fantastic scoring records in their early years but turned out prolific. At no stage did he compare their games to DCL.

But haters like you will twist it to ridicule the DCL supporters. Pathetic really.

Anyway. The kid missed a chance from the corner of the 6 yard box. Enjoy your weekend.

Cahill would have been 25 when he joined us and had 4-5 years in the lower leagues.

Writing off DCL after this season is poor form considering the work he does. He could have won it yesterday through his own determination. I think that miss will sit with him for a long time and he'll work twice as hard on his finishing. He's got a lot of minutes this year by default - he shouldn't have but that's how it gone. The reason we keep seeing him is that physically he's a weapon. Only going to get better.

I was prepared for that because it backs my point up about strikers taking time to mature, I purposely picked the Premier leagues best 2 strikers because at Dominics age they were wet behind the ears and not the prolific scorers that they became, mind you they were bedded in properly over the course of a few years and not expected to carry the striking burden in their first seasons.

You do realise that he has just used both shearer and Henry as a comparison don't you?

I did yes, did I say at any point DCL was going to be as good as those players or did I use a relative comparison for the same age of development, if you can't tell the difference then that's not really my problem.

He's matured a lot this season through playing. He should have scored, but I'm more willing to judge him under a decent manager when Hopefully our strikers get more than 1 chance per game
