2017/18 Dominic Calvert-Lewin

So after facing all 19 teams this season you popped round to an away fan and asked “do you rate Calvert-Lewin?”.

That’s one bizarre questionnaire.

When did I say that? Nowhere did I say i'd spoken to a supporter from every club.

Like your being a bit of an arse of purpose really.

I haven’t made it a direct comparison at all, i’ve Just used the exact same figures as you! I was simply pointing out that even if we take Shearer as a decent example of your point, it’s important to note that his numbers were a little better than you intimated.

You’re literally responding to a post in which i’ve informed You that Shearer was playing more than DCL by arguing that Shearer was being bedded in slowly and DCL isn’t. Did that make more sense in your head than it does on the screen?

Shearer played something like 5 games in his first season, 10 games(in which he didn't score) in his second season and so on he got more game time as he got older. You seem to be completely missing the point I was making, it's purely about young strikers maturing into the role and learning their trade.

This is DCLs first full season and he's played more than any other player and he is nowhere near the finished article. If our fans get their way he probably never will be. I love the childish little comment at the end, do grow up. Conversation over if you can't have a sensible debate.

games played 5, 10, 26, 36...natural progression 10 games no goals, 35 games 5 goals, 48 games 14 goals(season 3)dear me is that enough for you.

1987–88 First Division 5 3 0 0 0 0 – – 5 3
1988–89 First Division 10 0 0 0 0 0 – – 10 0
1989–90 First Division 26 3 3 0 6 2 – – 35 5
1990–91 First Division 36 4 4 2 6 6 – 2 2 48 14
1991–92 First Division 41 13 7 2 6 3 – 6 3 60 21

It’s not his first season though! It’s not even his first season playing regularly for us, even if we ignore the 50 games or so at a lower level to try and help make your argument a coherent one.

You’re comparing figures for when Shearer was 17 to when DCL is 21 and saying it shows he was bedded in slowly. It literally makes no sense.

I have to say though, you’re showing great persistence in comparing two players who you’re definitely not comparing, I admire you for that if nothing else.

Once again, you are struggling with the concept of natural progression, the point I was making about strikers maturing as they grow, you can't seem to grasp it so resort to trying to demean my point entirely. I don't want nor need your admiration, getting you to understand a simple point is the order of the day.

I thought he was excellent when he came on. Battled for everything and linked up with Tosun and Baines, this is when playing out of position too. Shame he wasn't composed for that chance as he deserved a goal.

I'm not being an arse you literally said it:

Look at the post you quoted, i even said any opposition supporter id spoken to, not EVERY opposition supporter. Haven't said anywhere that id spoken to someone from every club, just that the ones ive spoken to don't rate DCL at all.

There are a few issues with that though.

Firstly, as has been said numerous times, this isn’t just a numbers thing. My concern about whether DCL will score enough goals to be our main striker is not just based on his figures, but on what I actually see. His movement, reactions, composure, initial instinct etc don’t look to me like those of a natural finisher.

Secondly, shearers numbers are better than you suggest if you don’t just look at his record in the league. His birthday is in August so entire seasons take place where he’s the same age - in the one when he was 20 he scored 14 goals in all competitions, at 21 he scored 14 in the league and 21 in all. DCL is 21 and has 8 in all so far.

Thirdly, and most importantly for me, is the suggestion that we’re somehow asking too much of a 21 year old to play regularly. Why? Shearer wasn’t being slowly bedded in at all, he played 48 games while he was 20. Lukaku was leading the line for us at 20 after doing it for West Brom at 19, while Jesus, rashford, Abraham etc are all younger than DCL and playing at least as much if not more. We might have asked too much of him because of his level of ability, but certainly not because of his age.

I’ve said before that I think he’ll make a decent player but I don’t apologise for expecting someone who gets picked for the Everton first team to be good enough to justify it. He doesn’t get a pass for missing sitters because he’s ‘only’ 21.

Dixie was 20 at the start of the 1927/28 season.

I think DCL is a player, just doesn't have the finishing. Which sort of leaves him in no land as he doesn't have enough attributes to play anywhere elseeither imo.

He has goals & assists this season check it out...

Has progressed massively from last season...

Continuous improvement for the next 2/4 years will mature him into a good/great player...

Rate this lad & will support our youngsters always...
I'll support him as long as he's an everton player but I just don't see him becoming a top striker. Hope I'm wrong, just don't see it.

Maybe we should start some threads on oppo teams forums?

Ok pal, be an arse.

This is hilarious...'ask any supporter of the 19 other prem sides and they don't rate him' (or words to that effect lol

Well we were joined by a group of random reds who said they rated DCL and wished they had him + thought he was very good yesterday apart from the miss...as did the Chelsea fan I was with...

So I didn't ask 'any supporter' I was told that lol

Anyone who understands football can see he's a player with huge potential.

Changed the game when he came on , then pretty much missed a sitter . That’s Everton in one player for you , build you up to knock you down .

I certainly think there is a player in there , looks to be talented but as has been said he doesn’t look a natural finisher . I think we’ve seen an improvement this season and we’ll hopefully see more next .
