By making it easier to legally get into this country obviously.

One of my closest friends is an immigration attorney here...our laws are ridiculous. Mostly built from a right wing agenda of 'they took our job' type of scaremongering.

This nation was is built on immigrants...and throughout our history the 'they took our job' argument has existed. It's simply not a factual argument most of the time.

Only suggested correction

Stop illegal immigration by making it legal immigration. It's brilliant really.

Or we could take the opposite track--the real problem isn't immigration, it's trade. We need to stop immigration by reducing our reliance on other nations regions cities neighborhoods streets ethnicities families. Everything I need is within the confines of my 4 walls--from food to work to culture. Everyone and everything else can GTF.

I think "open borders" means entirely different things from Europe to the US, especially given that the US has two borders, both with trade partners and allies. Also, it's worth noting that while the US has no shortage of race relations issues, it actually has other races and ethnic groups within and doesn't suffer from the same sort level of isolationism/nationalism* that most European cultures face.

*Some running for office would like to increase the isolationist/nationalist position.

Open borders means no border control. Anyone can enter. I don't see how it differs in regards to Europe and USA?

someone somewhere said it could be paid out of nafta or the federal aid budget to mexico which in a roundabout way would be 'mexico paying for it'
have the exact dimensions of the wall ever been specified?

Engineering experts have estimated it would cost $25b to build the wall spanning the US-Mexico border. They also expect it would cost that much again in maintenance/patrolling costs etc every 7 years.

What will it achieve? In a practical sense next to nothing. I'm pretty sure every immigrant (legal or illegal) to the USA doesn't just come wandering through the Mexican desert. From a campaign sense it is an actual tangible response to stopping immigration, the whole thing he has worked his supporters into a frenzy about.

The fact that a 3,200 km wall is a serious policy of a presidential candidate in 2016 is astounding. It is basically just throwing money down the drain even before you consider the underlying racist and divisive nature of it.

Surely it would stop Muslim ray guns though, right?

Mexico will pay. ;)

Surely controlled immigration is the middle ground? Which is what Trump is proposing.

We already have "controlled immigration." What Trump's purporting might be on that spectrum as well, but it's not acceptable to me. If you think it's a lawless free-for-all currently, you've be mesmerized by the rhetoric.
