Duncan Ferguson the coach

..Jeffers, Unsworth, Tait, Ebbrell, Jevons all ex-players coaching at the club. Joe Royle has left but Martin Dobson has come in. I’ve said for a long time there’s too much nepotism involved in such appointments. It’s all too romantic.
Yep. Jobs for the boys is destructive here for two reasons:

1/ it takes a position up that should be filled by a specialist - and just because you played for the club does not make you a specialist.
2/ I'm convinced it creates an alternative power structure that can cut across a manger's authority. I'd bet a pound to a penny that our former players in their coaching roles have been at the heart of players' effort dropping off.

Judging from what Tosun and Lukaku have said about him, I think he is doing a great job. He took Lukaku as a raw talent and turned him into a beast, but it's a just a shame Rom couldn't sort his apathy out when the going got tough or he just didn't fancy it. He even improved Vellious but unfortunately he didn't quite have the ability in the first place to make it here. At the end of the day he's got his coaching badges and we all know he'll give 100% for Everton, so I don't think he deserves any stick or criticism just because the emotional attachment helped him get the role. Even though it may be a deliberate decision to have Big Dunc more involved with Big Sam and Sammy Lee especially (to appease the fans), I think he'll keep Sammy Lee in line just in case he fancies sabotaging it for us.

Interestingly at Stoke on Saturday I was one section away from the tunnel. Sammy Lee started screwing up his face and pumping his fists. It looked a bit contrived and there was a bit of abuse towards him from those around me! I heard one fella shout 'F off yer F'in red sh!te c@*!' When Duncan Ferguson came to the tunnel I started chanting his name as a fanboy if anything and nobody joined in. I pumped my firsts looking at him and he did it back. Whether or not he heard me singing or not I don't know but it will be a memorable moment :)

Interesting thought that is Dave, bearing in mind many managers had playing careers some good, some bad, so where does the specialist bit come into it or is that only in respect of coaches??????

Everton is full of ex-players etc. on the coaching staff. I kind of agree we should just be picking the best person for the job, but you can argue that having ex-players etc. helps the current players to understand more what the club means.

To be fair to Duncan though, he's good at what he does and he's also a very charismatic guy who people warm to. Manager's will always want people like that around in their staff and in their teams. I'd imagine that's why he's always involved under different managers.

Yes and no. The only titles and trophies we have won since the 60’s have been won by teams managed by ex Everton players. Other specialist coaches brought in have won zilch.......

Tosun has credited Duncan Ferguson with kick-starting his Toffees career

“I work on my game after training with Duncan Ferguson. He was a legend of Everton and he has helped me a lot. We work together on my physique and on my shooting so I can do better on the pitch.

Lukaku also credited Duncan's coaching with improving his game.

Yeah but its jobs for the boys innit.

:hayee::hayee:

Think by now we could count Unsworth as a specialist in U23s

Really gone down in my estimation with him peddling Sam's "2 points from relegation before I came in" bollocks for him.

“At one point this season we were in the bottom three - in fact, we were only two points above the relegation zone when the manager walked in the door - so we were worried about relegation.
“But since the manager has come in he has managed to turn that around. The players have taken his message on board and managed to climb the table. That is incredibly positive for the Club and for the team. We are looking to finish the season strongly and push for Europe.
“That was probably unthinkable three or four months ago when we were worried about relegation, so you have to give the manager and team credit for that.”

Duncan also believes the draw against Liverpool last weekend was a step in the right direction.
“I think it was a positive result,” he said. “Of course, the last 15 to 20 minutes of the game we put them on the back foot and we should have nicked it. We’re hoping to do that from the start of games and hopefully that will happen, starting at the weekend.
