2022/23 Dwight McNeil

I see it the other way.

Can forgive McNeill because of his age, and his potential he has shown. He does he a good whip on him even if his training routine is running in custard.

Maupay has always been distinctly average and I question what I’m earth they were e expecting when they signed him. Doesn’t fit any profile in the team whatsoever.
I moved this out of the transfer thread because I think you make a good point on McNeil.

That point is essentially he's not hopeless. There are some parts of his game that can maybe be developed and I think there is probably a role he'd fit. All of that will require real coaching though and I think we're all pretty aware of the limitations there.

What I'd love to see is a permanent spot on the right for him. First off he's honestly the best option there. Iwobi, Gordon and Gray are all terrible at it. You can argue McNeil is bad at it to but the difference is he won't step on Patterson and his overlapping. That for me is enough at the moment to put him in. Patterson overlapping is the best threat we have out there.

But I also think he's got a chance if he takes up narrower positions to make an actual impact. He's slow. He doesn't do a ton of beating men. Get him coming in off the right, on his strong foot, and see if he can start to figure it out in there. I've seen him take up good positions between the lines at times and we desperately need that. This to me is the only chance of him coming good. He's not going to suddenly be a useful left wing launching crosses.

He’s a master at that fake press thing where he’ll run up to someone dead fast so it gets recorded on the pressing stats, but then just stop dead and not even try to put a foot in. Sigurdsson was the best at that manoeuvre, but this fella runs him close. As cowardly a player as I’ve ever seen in more ways than one.
Iwobi is master class at that form of non tackling nobody does it better, strangely he must have put a lot of hard work, practice and effort into being that good at it.

He’s been played on the right, all that happens is he’s so one-footed that teams just have two players stood in the area where he wants to cut into and he loses the ball or plays the safe pass back to the midfielders. He’s the most predictable player in the league, no one is gonna give him all the time in the world to come inside on his strong/only foot and do what he wants, why would they? He hasn’t got the ability to drop a shoulder and change direction quickly either.

I agree, it’s a massive Hail Mary gamble that’s unlikely to work. The only thing is that at the moment Paterson makes a lot of good runs off the ball and Gordon routinely gets his head down and ignores him or tries to go it alone. Possible McNeil might link better with the overlapping right back.

Expecting him to become a reliable inside forward, cutting in and shooting seems really unlikely for the reasons you say. Could he be a sort of playmaker like Pienaar combined with Baines?

If not, no point him being in the team until DCL is back 100% fit and getting in the box consistently - will see if he can put the crosses into him from the left like I assume was the plan for signing him.

If not, no point him being in the team until Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back 100% fit and getting in the box consistently - will see if he can put the crosses into him from the left like I assume was the plan for signing him.

I very much doubt this because he’s slow of mind as well as slow on his feet. He lacks vision, intelligence and bravery to try incisive passes. Pienaar was never rapid but his footballing brain was incredibly quick, he knew where Baines was going to be without even having to look. McNeil has none of the attributes Pienaar had. I honestly just think he is rubbish and offers nothing on a football pitch.

Happened about 5 times in the first half

Him desperately trying to get it onto his left foot to get the shot off was embarrassing to watch
