ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 2

Spurs being in the final with them has completely punctured the build up to it this year for them. It’s completely different from last year where every outlet was banging on about the final since the first leg of the semis. No one seems arsed this year. Two premier league teams who everyone knows aren’t as good as City having a kick and rush fest in the final after seeing off a team of Ajax kids in the semi and an over the hill Barca.

Uefa need to reshape the CL if they want to retain interest in it as at the moment it’s being ruined by too much weighting on home advantage in two legged ties and away goal rules. Teams can get to the final having lost every single away game they play in the competition. There’s no other competition in football you can do that in.
You serious.
The 2 semi finals were two of the most watched games of the season, literally couldn't predict what was going to happen.
City spurs another one, psg united another, juve coming from 2-0 down

The interest in the cl couldn't be higher, the increased prize money shows that.

We’re starting to see a trend more and more though of teams winning titles in the top leagues being unable to go the distance in the CL. The CL semi finals are no longer bringing together the best 4 teams in Europe. In fact it’s turning into a lottery of which team doesn’t have any major domestic distractions and gets lucky with injuries/fixtures/ the placement of the tie come March/April. City and PSG would have beat any of the semi finalists at a neutral venue, and both went out via away goals having not even been beaten outright over two legs.

You can’t deny that the CL is exciting but if it persists with the top sides not making the latter stages then the prestige will start to erode.

1. Being the domestic champion doesnt mean anything if you are tactically naive in Europe. Lowly Ajax handled Madrid and Juventus (the so called Giants of European football) before throwing the fateful second half in their spurs game. Madrid and Juventus were tactically naive. Has got nothing to do with their domestic form.
2. Define "4 best teams" please. Because the way I see it, there are no fixed 4 best teams. There are only 4 best teams every season. And they play in the semi finals. Also, out the top 4 teams this season, the two teams that bowed out, were their respective league champions. Which brings me back to point #1.
3. City and PSG beating any teams in a neutral venue is a moot point. Because it is not being played in a neutral venue. Hypothetical scenario and all that.

I normally agree with you. This isnt one of them. Just my 2 cents mate.

I wonder if she follows a team.

Aside from the lunatic bias a lot of the rest doesn't make sense either. Drogba had a fantastic 2009/10 season (on the back of a 5 goal season) but after that he scored 20 goals in 3 seasons. Gerrard on the left? Ederson instead of De Gea? Fat Frank on the right? Theres room for Lampard, just not in that formation.

Salah, Sterling and Kante i've got no issue with. Even though Salah hasn't won anything, has only been here two seasons and has already seen a massive dip in performance it's still not that bad a shout.

It’s just a glorified European version of the FA cup now.

It’s great viewing once we get to the ko stages, I do enjoy watching it but it’s been a long time since the runners have been acknowledged as the best team in Europe. I couldn’t tell you the last time a team won it who actually managed to win there own domestic league.

Like the FA cup I do think it’ll die a death soon if it doesn’t get revamped.

This year it seems not as relevant as it did in the past, even last year. I don’t know if that’s down to the English european dominance or 2 teams contesting the final who lost 9 games between them en route and haven’t won a league for a combined 90 years. It just seems to be getting bit Mickey Mouse but I do think they’ll change the format soon.

before i get called bitter blue and all that, it lost all credibility in 2005 when a team not even good enough to finish above a team with marcus bent up front "won" it, and UEFA didn't even have the foresight to have a rule in place for the possibility of a winner not being good enough to qualify for it.

Like you say, it's supposed to be the best team in europe but everyone knows the best team in europe is never actually the champion anymore, it's lost all prestige and to me any romance seeing as you have a core of about 16 teams who are in it every year. It's dull now, you end up with the same teams playing each other every couple of years it seems. Just get the actual champions and a couple of second placed teams in there and have a real competition.

Of all the nauseating RS journos that plague us with their guff non-stop, she has put forward a real case this season of being the worst of the lot.

She's had a mini breakdown. She went on holiday with @HongKongToffee and @havrey0123 after the season finished. This is an attempt to give herself false confidence for the CL final. She doesn't believe that's the team of the decade anymore than I do.

Wouldn't put Salah there tbh, has won nothing and had 1 great season. Where the eff is Aguero, Hazard?

Real Madrid in 2017.

But that's the beauty of it, it's not scripted that the team with the best squad always wins it. Anyone has a chance if they play it right tactically

You can pretty much predict who the top 6 in the prem will be next season, you can't predict who will be in the semis of the cl next season.

Spurs grouped with Barca and inter and got through, you can't predict it.

It's a farce that it's called the 'Champions League' also, how it's seeded, just put all the teams in a hat and they go into each group how they're drawn out, so you could easily have the big teams in the same group, that wouldn't fit the money making agenda the big teams expect financially from it though.
