ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

That is the entire reasoning for VAR, to stop diving/offsides/cheating. If it isn't going to stop blatant cheating - like in the case of Mane's penalty - then people are going to come up with a very obvious conclusion.

Well it was never a pen. The only way I can see why it wasn't over ruled by VAR was to protect the refs decision making at a key time in the match.

Of course that still leaves questions open regarding the refs actual decision making itself.

It has stopped cheating and incorrect decisions. Pretty much all goals / penalties are reviewed now. It can't ever be 100% eradicated but it's certainly stopped instances of clearly incorrect decisions. The Wolves goal earlier in the season where the player handballed it, the ref gave it, it was overruled. This weekend for West Ham, the linesman incorrectly flagged for Palace's winner, VAR checked and overruled the ref. It's happening more regularly than you're suggesting.

The only way I can see why it wasn't over ruled by VAR was to protect the refs decision making at a key time in the match.

As per the above, plenty of ref decisions have been overturned since it's been brought in.

Well it's not doing a great job of legitimising the Premier League.

All I see is decisions going their way, whilst at the same time going against their rivals. The bias towards them is so blatant it's almost laughable, and to be honest i'm bored of it. Football is no longer a sport, it's a monopoly.

It shouldn't. But it does. That's the system. Players go down in the box to make the ref make a decision. It's been going on for donkeys years.

If there's contact, the referee is there to make a judgement call is to whether any contact is sufficient to warrant the fall.

VAR is there to overrule any clear and obvious errors on the refs part, for example if the ref perceives contact where there isn't any.

There was contact. It was a pen. Move on.
I wish you'd move on cuz.

Was a defo pen an the week before mane should have had a definate pen which wasn't given so if var, referees, other clubs keepers are throwing the game in Liverpools favour because the pundits the press the fa the prem all want them to win the league don't you realise as an evertonian how stupid these conspiracy theories are we want to worry about are club an team an stop worryin about anything to do with Liverpool FC we need to get a grip big time

It was a dive as clear as day, there wasn't enough contact to make him fall over therefore he has deceived a match official.
See Mane disagrees mate. And so do the referees. And the VAR. They all think it was a penalty. Atleast it was not as ridiculous and clumsy as that Sturridge dive (v Palace was it? Or Stoke?). That was blasphemous and he should've been banned for that dive alone.

All said and done, Contact inside the penalty box is dangerous. Players from the defending team must know this. Why risk something in the dying moments of a game especially in such a crucial situation.

Hmmm, you mean to tell me they’re lucky again?

Unnatural luck, theirs.

It was the dive that won the penalty, not the contact. No dive, no whistle, no pen.
The dive makes the ref award the pen, VAR decide "oh there was some contact, must be a pen then", completely ignoring the dive. Incredible.

I don't buy into any big conspiracy theory, but I have zero doubt there are innumerable mini conspiracies at work. "You don't award a last minute penalty against Liverpool at the kop end" didn't a referee say that? What about the army of kopite pundits on tv/the media? The fawning over them, the endless pro-rs clickbait and drum banging and narrative writing all has an impact.

It is basic psychology. Officials and pundits, and let's be clear, VAR judges, are predisposed to see them lot as winners, unbeatable, honourable bastions of the beautiful game. 9/10 times this means they will get the benefit of the doubt, the rub of the green, a dodgy pen here, a let off there. They can't do it without skill of course but that's not in question. City do not have anything like that level of blind, across the board goodwill. Manure used to, perhaps.

If that incident had been at the other end, then no pen, possibly even a yellow for diving. We all know it.

Are you taking the p*ss? Are you a red on a wind up?

Cracks beginning to appear? They are 8 points clear in the league and have conceded less than anyone else.

Our club is on its a**e & part of our fan base has this weird infatuation with them lot from across the park.

Let’s concentrate on making ourselves half decent before we even bother thinking about them.

Compare our values, rude boy. Who’s most likely to be clandestine?

And btw, this is the RS thread so as a newcomer, may I remind you of the onus on members to keep threads on topic, so if you want to continue slagging US, do so in the Everton forum.

And of course, welcome to GOT.

There is a double page spread on Liverpool in nearly every daily Telegraph Sport, even when they haven't been playing. There is one today, not a match report. The Telegraph sports staff are RS supporters almost to a man.
