ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

@EverTheOptimist can you please come in and confirm these numbers please as you said they were going to let him leave on a free at the end of the season as it was just the most logical and sensible thing to do for Liberpool Fc

He's basically on a flat rate of 18m a year plus another 2.5m if certain targets are met for an additional 3 years son there's a 60m commitment right there to a 30 year old.

I'm sure your aware that your club (erm I mean Liberpool) pay the biggest agent fees so I'm sure he's took a nice hefty wedge to get his client to sign this contract.

So if we factor in original fee paid, plus his original contract and signing on fee and agent fees, along with his improved contract a couple of years ago, along with his agents fee again and then this new deal as well, I'd say thats cost about a squillion trillion quid overall.

Liverpool will say it makes sense I suppose: they can get another decent season out of him before the pace begins to desert him and can sound out a buyer for him with 2 years left on his contract.

But if you look at the overall picture, rather than them in isolation, they probably should be rebuilding with bolder moves now when City and Pep are still in their pomp and are obviously massive title favourites again with Haaland's arrival. They cant compete with that and they should have got Salah out the door this summer.

Mane out the door and Salah half out of it doesn't make sense.

All their star players will want parity now. Unless they sell him next season and get a big fee for him it’s a risky move.
I'm not being picky but every decision they've made over the last 4 to 5 years have been pragmatic and non-emotional choices. Letting Mane go was the recent example. They did it with Wijnaldum as well. They are happy to lose players who they don't think offer value for a future and invest that money into other players. Sometimes younger players. Sometimes it's just a swap - Wijnaldum out, Thiago in.

You could argue most of their decision making in terms of contracts and player purchases is risk and emotion averse rather than risky.

Unless they suddenly lost their senses or decided to make a hugely risky move then I'd suspect a new 3 year contract at 60-70M cost is viewed as a pragmatic choice by them. They've got revenue of 550-600M so a 20-25M commitment each season for the next 3 isn't a massive commitment.

They are the complete opposite of us in that they make sensible and strategic decisions continually. Decisions that fit into a long term plan and philosophy. Both of which we don't have and why the best players are being sold whilst the RS retain theirs.

Anyone thinking this puts them in some sort of financial trouble or is a sign of desperation is looking for reasons to be cheerful. Reasons that aren't really there.I'd be much happier if he was walking on a free next summer and they had a season of constant speculation about his future. Now they have one of the best forwards in the league committed for another 3 years.

Being entirely honest, Salah is a good player, so losing him would have been a huge loss for Liverpool; they know that, as does pretty much everyone else.

Losing him on a free next summer would be a terrible piece of business as he'd be very difficult to replace when they got no income from a sale.

It'd be even worse if he didn't give 100% for the year and then left, so they were stuck in a situation of selling him now with Mane, seeing him go next year or...

... they decide to break their wage structure. Salah and Mane have had the club by the balls and they've caved in. Some will rejoice and I actually get that.

However, I think most fans will see it as retaining a top player but at the cost of potential long-term financial consequences. A little bit of a catch-22 situation.
