ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

I'm not being picky but every decision they've made over the last 4 to 5 years have been pragmatic and non-emotional choices. Letting Mane go was the recent example. They did it with Wijnaldum as well. They are happy to lose players who they don't think offer value for a future and invest that money into other players. Sometimes younger players. Sometimes it's just a swap - Wijnaldum out, Thiago in.

You could argue most of their decision making in terms of contracts and player purchases is risk and emotion averse rather than risky.

Unless they suddenly lost their senses or decided to make a hugely risky move then I'd suspect a new 3 year contract at 60-70M cost is viewed as a pragmatic choice by them. They've got revenue of 550-600M so a 20-25M commitment each season for the next 3 isn't a massive commitment.

They are the complete opposite of us in that they make sensible and strategic decisions continually. Decisions that fit into a long term plan and philosophy. Both of which we don't have and why the best players are being sold whilst the RS retain theirs.

Anyone thinking this puts them in some sort of financial trouble or is a sign of desperation is looking for reasons to be cheerful. Reasons that aren't really there.I'd be much happier if he was walking on a free next summer and they had a season of constant speculation about his future. Now they have one of the best forwards in the league committed for another 3 years.

They clearly didn’t want to do this though so something has changed.

Either Salah has relented after realising the market for him isn’t what he thought it was (maybe he was hoping Mbappe would move and PSG would come in for him), or Liverpool have panicked at Mane going and decided to tie him down. Either way both parties could have sorted this months ago but didn’t so someone is now doing something they didn’t want to do.

It depends how it turns out. If they get three seasons of absolute prime Salah then sure it might be worth the money. If he does his knee the first week of the season and they miss out on CL football then that is a massive wage to have on the books for three seasons.

So a free signing? A net spend of zero!

Dem redz sorting out football's woes.

What’s going to happen to all their ‘we can’t pay the same wages as der oil clubs’ arguments now?

Smashing world record fees multiple times
Squad players costing huge fees in every position of the pitch
One of the highest wage bills in the history of European football

‘We do things the right way though’

Chequebook club. The embodiment of modern football, the biggest oil club imaginable.

Because we never spend at all do we?

Just popped in the Sky Transfer centre online and all the updates are about Mo. Every update for the last 2 hours without a break for any other story. Obessed. I don't know why it shocks me.

Fair enough mate.

I understand why people want to see positives in this. I very rarely come into this thread and this part of the forum. I find concentrating on what they are doing as toxic to my perception of Everton.

The odd time I do come in this thread I see people predicting the demise of the RS at every decision they make. None of it has ever come remotely close to reality. Now maybe Salah does get injured or his form does drop off a cliff and they are stuck with a 70M financial millstone for the next 3 years. But let's be realistic they would walk into the Top 4 with or without Salah. They managed to qualify 2 seasons ago with CBs who are barely Championship level playing big chunks of the season.

Good to see people looking at the positive side of things but let's not tie ourselves in knots trying to find positives when there isn't any. At this point in time the last season's leading goalscorer, the leading assist maker and the current Player of the Season has just re-signed for them for 3 more seasons when it looked like he'd be gone. Not sure there's a whole lot of genuine positivity we can take from that.

I'll leave it there though since any time I do spend on this forum I want it to be thinking about other things. Namely Everton and the current issues that grip the club rather than that focus going on anything happening elsewhere.

Liverpool will say it makes sense I suppose: they can get another decent season out of him before the pace begins to desert him and can sound out a buyer for him with 2 years left on his contract.

But if you look at the overall picture, rather than them in isolation, they probably should be rebuilding with bolder moves now when City and Pep are still in their pomp and are obviously massive title favourites again with Haaland's arrival. They cant compete with that and they should have got Salah out the door this summer.

Mane out the door and Salah half out of it doesn't make sense.
60M in wages over 3 years for one player????

Salah reported as a 3 year extension on a deal that expires next season, so has he got 4 years there now, or is it actually 3 years including this season so effectively two years longer than his original contract ?

We can but hope

They'll continue to lie and claim poverty will be my guess. Zero change.
