ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

There'll be those who will question why the Saudi government would facilitate a deal that would directly compete with their own club in Newcastle.

On a literal sense, that makes sense. However, from my own experiences out in the Middle East, status is a huge element to relations within the region.

Look at Qatar and the WC: financially, it's an appalling deal when you consider the cost (infrastructure, bribes etc.) for what it'll physically provide.

Do they need all these stadia? New metro? No, but the prestige is huge - ahead of what Saudi Arabia have done or what UAE has achieving in sporting terms.

If a private investor does come in for the RS, it will be with the full (yet quiet) backing of the regime, as it would provide two PL clubs within their sphere.

They would have Newcastle, who will go on to be a power, and the RS (sadly, icons in the game). That's more than City, PSG and the other such clubs.

United may be a better option however because in terms of global reach they're fluffin' massive.

The Saudis are said to admire the Kopite's kill rate.

That's true, apart from Heighway who was born in Dublin but I think he spent most of his childhood in Sheffield.

Elisha Scott was from Belfast.

Other than that I can't think of any.
Heighway was born in Dublin to English parents who were studying / working there.

Ronnie Whelan in the early 80s would have ben the first Irish Catholic to have played for them I'd imagine.

There's a strange silence over Liverpool FCs anti-Irish history.

Yes very true. If I wasn't so nauseated by anything to do with them I'd do some research.

Well spotted with that photo btw. Better eyesight than me!

What about Protestants in Ireland ? being founed by the lodge I would of though they would of been ok?

Yes, they turned a blind eye to that 'kind'.

What a history they have and get away with: formed by Tories, steeped in sectarianism and supported by mass murderers. The BBC love them though. Cant think why....

Those sectarian bobble hats in the 80s I never liked, with a quarter on them.
My Grandad (mums side) was quite high up in the orange lodge, 60s im talking here, when he found out my dad supported Everton he ignored him for over a year in case he was a catholic!

I watched that BBC Wales programme about Toshack last night.

Interesting story I wasn't aware of. He was interviewed and accepted as the next Liverpool manager in the early 80s because Paisley told the LFC board he was stepping down. Toshack had all but wrapped up his duties at Swansea where he was manager and then was told by the Liverpool board Paisley had changed his mind last minute because "he wanted to top up his pension for a few more seasons".

What an utter scumbag that Paisley was: punching pensioners and reneging on deals.
I was only a kid but I found him to be a real sore loser, didn’t often happen often back then that they got beat but I can never, ever recall him giving credit to the opposition,a right crying, moaning old sod, hence I’ve never fallen for the “cuddly old uncle Bob”myth, another who was totally made for those rats I’m afraid.

Paisley was scum - a nasty piece of work, but he wasn't alone at that club in never crediting the opposition. It goes with the job.

Very true Dario - that's exactly how I remember him. Bad loser, always grumbling - "only one team was trying to play football" - that kind of stuff if they didn't win.
