ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

I'd say raise their salaries slightly and spend everything else on training them to be better at their job.

Imagine being ridiculed because you're horrible at your job and you just saying "ah it's cuz I get paid less than the same job in a different country" lol
You can raise their (piper) salaries as much as you like, but if the guys who pay them still keep on ordering them (call the tune) to have...let's call it...'Different Rules of Engagement' depending which teams are playing. Nothing will change !

As Ballack hit the nail on the head when he said, at one stage most teams had a proper out and out striker, a Carew, a Yakubu, Kevin Davies, Benjani and a few others who may not have been world class, but could give a defender a hard game. I remember when peg leg got motm when we stopped them winning the league, if we had Cahill or Lukaku we would on won against them. He's defended in an era, where you don't have many physical strikers who can mix it up with defenders, any time he's played against a quality striker he's looked poor.
To add to that, they had a midfield of three yard dogs protecting him. Now that those yard dogs are on the scrap heap, we're seeing just how limited he actually is as a defender. He's nowhere near Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell, Kompany or even Ledley King.

I’m not sure he’s even the best centreback in the current Liverpool team never mind the best of all time in the prem

I’d have any of these players ahead of him without even having to consider it:

Ferdinand, Vidic, Stam, Varane, Campbell, Adams, Terry, Carvalho, Thiago Silva, Kompany, Dias, Stones, Desailly, Gallas

They’re only the ones I can properly remember as well, there’s probably loads like McGrath, Pallister, Bruce, Keown etc. who were just as good as Van Dijk but didn’t have the ridiculous media following he does and a load of made up stats about them not being dribbled past even though you see it about three times every game.

Not sure about all of them to be honest but prime Ferdinand, Adams, Campbell, Stam, Silva, Kompany, Terry and Desailly were all huge game changing center backs in their day who were definitely more consistently great.

We shouldn’t deny VD was a top defender for a couple of seasons but players like Terry, Kompany and Campbell were at the top of their game for about a decade.

I just don’t rate him positionally at all. He could never have been an Italian centreback. Van Dijk used to have pace so could get himself out of trouble but the very best CBs almost don’t need any pace, they’re just wherever the danger is. Van Dijk is far too often nowhere near it pointing and berating Matip or Konate who are actually having to do put their body on the line.

He’s got a good long pass on him, he’s good at attacking corners, and when he had pace he was good at defending counter attacks. Now that he’s lost his pace he’s even worse in my book. He’s never positionally been good though,

For me he’s just nowhere near a Sergio Ramos, or a Nesta, Maldini, a Puyol - just not even in the same conversation as them. He just has never had the basic positional understanding. If he had an average keeper behind him he’d have been shown up to be even worse.

I’m not saying he’s a bad centreback, obviously not, but in my view he’s never been in the world class bracket, and never close to being the best in the league. I think Konate is better than him now, I think Matip was better than him a few seasons back. Just a hugely hugely overhyped player for no other reason than he joined Liverpool on a huge fee.

Excellent post. I have said this for years. Got laughed when RS fans at work trotted out the line of the best CB Liverpool had ever had. I responded that if I was picking a RS side, then VVD wouldn't even make side. When asked who I would pick, I said Hansen. This prompted ridicule until I said that when VVD had six titles to his name he could be included a a 'great'. Personally I hate Hansen, especially after he played basket ball in his own area in the Milk Cup final of 1984, but to his credit he played at a time when, within reason, you could kick the crap out of each other, plus he put a shift in, whereas the one legged Dutchman stands around with his arms outstretched like Worzel Gummidge.

Daniel Agger when he was fit was a better defender than him.

If this happens then the FA have basically let down all referees at all levels in the country again. The Mitrovic ban wasn’t harsh enough.

This is slightly off subject, but Premier League referees apparently earn ‘up to’ £70k a year. In La Liga apparently it’s believed to be around 4x that amount. Who in their right mind would aspire to be a Premier League referee when you see the amount of abuse they routinely get? You’d have to be insane.

Maybe if referees salaries were increased to be a little more in line with players then we might get a better standard of personnel and officiating levels.

The FA need to make a point here. If you touch the referee it should be an immediate yellow card. Give the referee some proper power and respect like in rugby union.
Definitely - wouldn't go near that job with the years needed to get there, short career guarantee and abuse you suffer. It's the politician effect - instead of complaining about how much they get paid, pay them more and you get better people who deserve that wage!

If it's all about the money wouldn't they be more open to a big brown envelope fat Sam bung?
