The whole 'how much they get paid' argument would be defunct if they (less so individuals and more so the system) were suitably held to account.

You can pay a referee £50,000 or £500,000, but if there isn't any form of independent regulatory system that ensures consistency and high standards...

... it's pointless. Has refereeing in this country improved since it became a professional job rather than amateur? Genuinely, I'm not so sure.

I saw a notable improvement in premier league officiating the other day when that linesman elbowed the red ratface.
