ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Remember it well. Surreal achievement. Merthyr Tydfil absolutely STORMED the Beazer Homes League Midland division that season 87-88!

@daza_1973 Weirdly the records show Big Bob retiring from Football in July 1987 after spending 86/87 with the Martyrs, but I'm convinced you are right about him missing the Atalanta ties with injury. Maybe he was still in the squad but never played in 87/88 due to injury so the assumption was retirement in summer 87.

I'm going to watch Merthyr FC v Hendon at the hallowed Pen-y-Darren park tomorrow (they're two promotions from the conference), but I'm not sure there'll be 8000 pissed up screaming Valley boys in the crowd this time!
Coincidentally, I met a gentleman about two weeks ago at my local football club and we had a quick chat. He’s a ground hopper but his club is Merthyr, he was a lovely gent and clearly knew the welsh football scene quite well.

I think your right in what your saying and the commentator was hinting at Liverpool doping last night by saying how average Atalanta had been this season. Yet they go to Anfield and win 3-0, I think it's it's a poorly kept secret that Liverpool are doping. They simply aren't a skilful side, yet have managed all this success. I'm convinced the premier league have allowed Liverpool to dope to have someone challenge City. With United being a mess, you couldn't have City walking away with the league like in 2018, so liverpool started doping in 2018 to keep up with City. When Liverpool lose they don't just lose normally they fall apart. Players like VVD, Salah, Trent and Robertson look awful.

How else do people explain why Pep Lijnders doesn’t want the job even though he wants to be a number 1? Alonso has turned it down. This is a squad that got to 3 CL finals in 5 seasons, and pushed City to within a point twice and on for a third attempt. Why aren’t these managers jumping to take over this exciting squad with top prospects such as Jones Elliot Gomez Bradley Quansa and a 90 mill pound striker upfront? You’ve also got the best CB, RB and striker of all time in front of the best goalkeeper to ever play the game. Behind them there’s the real reason Argentina won the World Cup and the Hungarian Gerrard. Why wouldn’t Alonso leave Leverkusen?

Because every man and his dog know full well this lot will have to cycle off sometimes in the next 12-18 months and when they do no one (including Klopp) want to be around holding that bag as some of these players are complete dog poo. Any sensible manager will probably wait to be the manager after this next one gets fired for finishing 9th.

Lads, can you all give me praise for being one of the very first to call that floppy haired full back exactly what he was…. An overhyped average midfielder who can pick a long pass. Said from the first time I saw him that he’s a terrible defender and I got ridiculed for it…. NONE OF YOU ARE LAUGHING NOW !!!
Trent ……. My arse

That game last night: it probably underlines that when Liverpool play in the PL their opponents are playing their reputation rather than them. Atalanta stuck to a game plan that they'd go man for man on them and backed their own quality to either get a draw or even beat Liverpool.

It was all about belief. If the majority of PL teams did that Liverpool wouldn't be anywhere near a title challenging team.

Of course there's also the case that in Europe they get less favourable decisions and less time added on to get a goal.

Liverpool had almost their best team on the pitch for the second half...and then with Diaz on from the hour mark they had their best team on the pitch...and they played worse than in the first half.

The manager looks rattled and I would't be at all surprised if Palace held them at the weekend.

Don't wanna get too excited about this getting pumped just yet, not til they are out of the competition.

Still though, it's bewildering to me how they have been at the top so long this season. Whenever I watch them they look beatable. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a wed fart of a season's end for them.

They always concede chances, that are usually unbelievable misses, great saves, or like last night where the ball smashes off their goalkeeper who knows nothing about it. Last night some of the chances were taken, the only difference.

They’re used to the opposition missing the majority of chances against them. If we give an opposition striker half a yard on the edge of the box they’ve found the top corner before we know it, overhead kicks, outside of the foot volleys, perfect finishes into corners, they happen every game v us. When a team has a one on one against them, regardless of who is in goal, it’s a complete shock to everyone when a striker actually rolls it in. Its got to the point when some of their fans thought it was ‘unfair’ that Diallo finished that chance against them in the cup because they are genuinely astounded when anyone scores an easy chance against them so rarely does it happen. They’ve had a beating like that coming for a long time.
