ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Somebody on ‘the Ale House’ forum posted that they don’t understand the difference between the words ‘effect’ and ‘affect’.

Effect: noun. Example: ‘Drink effected his ability to walk in a straight line’.

Affect: Verb. Example: ‘He was visibly affected by the event’.

Affected: Adjective. Example: ‘ Danny Murphy’s accent is affected’.
Drink affected his ability to walk.

A affects B, B experiences the effect of A’s action.
Drink affected his ability to walk.
His inability to walk was an effect of the drink.

I think

They have totally lost their way over in terms of who they are and what they stand for.
They could be counted on as being a working class club for working class fans.
Over the last decade that has completely shifted.
I sometimes work at Goodison and at Anfield and the difference in fans is clear to see.
We are a working class club with working class fans.

LFC however is now full of middle to upper class followers who believe they are part of some posh members club.

They have completely sold their soul and identity in the pursuit of success at the cost of their core and local support.

They are now a club who seem to only care about the corporate dollar.
They are now and should be referred to as the Tory Reds.
This completely bemuses me. And the media saying "all this is going against who they are".

It isn't. Not a bit of it.

Anyone with any knowledge of Liverpool FC knows they historically have been a conservative club run by Conservative and sectarian bigots. Right from 1892 to the 1980s they were closely associated with Liverpool Conservatism and an exclusive recruitment policy.

They had a manager who made one statement abut socialism (and his definition of it was limited and pathetic, BTW) and all that vast history is brushed under the carpet and forgotten, it seems.

This (the actions of FSG) is CONTINUITY with their historical identity, not an abberation.

They have always had the business ethic first and foremost, and they are a Conservative minded football club.

Their entire recent premier league history is all about increasing profits through courting the cash rich foreign consumer at the expense of the local fans. That’s literally what they’ve built their club on including the physical manifestation of them knocking down Anfield residents houses to build a stand for more corporate boxes. They’ve got some of the most expensive season tickets in the league amongst one of the poorest local demographics.

But Shankly said something about socialism once upon a time so it’s all fine.

The Kopites have done an absolute marketing miracle for that club by portraying a face to the world for years of a righteous club . They've managed that in the face of business as usual for LFC Ltd Co.

The actions of that club in terms of its politics and its disregard for residents is an utter disgrace. The fans have their own terrible history also to cover up, of course.

The media have accepted the myth rather than looking at the reality.

To be fair to their fans, they've are not happy about the club furloughing none playing staff. I was expecting them to make every excuse possible, but even they realise it is shithouse behaviour from their club.
Totally. But when this is over and things return to normal, watch them re-group and use this "backlash" to add to their persecution complex. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is posted somewhere.

It's telling that they barely had a southern Irish player before 1980 while based in a city with such a high proportion of Irish.

I was looking at the fellas in top right and top left corners, trying to describe their reactions - kind of like the police have caught their mates and they're walking past, letting on they've never seen them before in their lives.

I think @cronullasharks has nailed what I was missing though:
The big bloke with the huge head looks like a hybrid of a 70s Dr Who monster and Paul Sinha from The Chase.

Disappointing stuff from the Other Lot over the park but perhaps they should accept the Furlough Payment along with the 80percent Premier League title they may have to accept ...

Apparantly FIFA or uefa going to announce indefinite end to the season. Leaving the end of the season up to each country fa

Kopites- we are getting the league!

Means nothing , they can still void the season if they so wish.

Next Merseyside Derby when they start singing their song we hijack it,

"and we never furloughed staff,
We never furloughed staff"

Every time they sing it.

What I find interesting though, is the deep splits it's causing and also the damage to the brand value they've created.

If I were to hazard a guess, I think FSG are potentially exposed in America. America is in a bad way, and it will only get worse over coming weeks. I mean at in Europe we have an end date, we have shut down, controlled the virus and normality will return over the coming weeks. In America, it's chaos, which markets hate.

I think a lot of hedge funds, particularly those around sports are little more than ponzi schemes. If your wealth is based upon implied values, and you borrow against it, you start to get negative equity.

There are 2 broad possibilities with this decision. 1) They are stupid and don't understand that the decision taken will hit them with sponsors and branding, over along period far beyond the short term gain of the cash in. 2) They are facing quite severe cash flow difficulties, after a relatively short period (with a far bigger set of challenges to become).

I don't believe they are stupid, so the former is out. I think the business is struggling. I had said previously the wage bill would be over £300m with the bonuses and contractual uplifts from winning the CL. That would have proven a pinch point, obviously no European final this season for the first time in 3 years, and greatly reduced revenues etc.

It's worth noting that the H & G era really only started to unravel after the the 2008 crash. This recession will be far more serious. American owners will potentially get badly exposed. They have given an indication of how they will deal with it, and it won't be by investing.

H & G got screwed over from the decision. I can assure youFSG will have seen and learnt from that, they won't be able to pull a fast one and wipe off their debt where FSG is concerned as easily.
