Divorce, tax bills, for 2. And I mean tax bills when you have invested in a scheme/scam that is supposed to shelter tax, but HMRC later decide was actually a scam. Loads of examples of footballers being stitched up like that.

my dad's never earned higher than about £8 an hour, has 4 kids and had 2 divorces to pay for and comes from a very poor background and he's uttely useless with money, never got close to bankruptcy like.

if you're a moron.

every footballer believes they need 5 sports cars a five story house (just for themselves) with an in built gym, jacuzzi, their own snooker table etc.? i've watched cribs mate, people don't have to live like that, they chose to.

they don't HAVE to dine at the fanciest restaurant and eat out every single night, they'd get better value for money for getting a £10 two course meal based on my experiences. they don't have to take 3 expensive 5 star holidays a year.

i will never have sympathy for anyone who spunks £20m by the age of 43, it shouldn't happen. people like gillespie, how can you lose money on gambling when you're a premiership footballer playing for man united? what the hell do you need to bet for?

And you don't have to have Sky Sports, or go to restaurants at all. Like i said, people generally spend the majority of the money they have. People in China can afford to live on a tiny salary and yet there's people in this country who earn £40k a year and blow the majority of it every year and up bankrupt. It's human nature to spend more when you earn more. Doesn't make you a moron. Consumer culture is a very powerful thing.

Oh yeah, not saying its right or anything, just that huge money makes you less appreciative of its worth, and earning loads can make you think it will carry on forever I guess. I know I did. And at one point was close to choosing bankruptcy as an option.

Didnt though, but can see why he might have been advised to do so. It isnt always about mishandling your money, but commitments you might make when you have some.

It's not like he retired early mate. He moved down the divisions so must of got used to his wage packet going down over the years. Also not like he had got an injury and couldn't plan for his retirement. The bloke thinks he's cleverer than he actually is. 16th haha.

Even so, but pretty sure he was on like £30k a WEEK ffs, at Bristol City. Or daft money anyway.

i just think it doesn't take much brains to live within your means. i don't have SKY sports because it's turd and show too much of those RS's from across the park ha. I eat out at fancyish restaurants from time to time, but i wouldn't say i do it anymore now i'm earning a pretty good wage to when i was unemployed. it's just common sense imo to always keep enough money in the bank incase the worst happens i.e. being unemployed for 9 months. i learnt that by myself, not through anyone else telling me.

so in about 3 months he's already earned enough to buy a swanky home outright that will be better than what the majority on this forum could afford already ha.

i'm not going to have sympathy, not even close. it's daft to piss that amount of money up the wall.

suppose. if i was a professional footballer though, i'd know from an early age that i'd be retiring around the age of 40 max and wouldn't have any desire to work after that, so you'd have some sort of plan in place to accomodate that, surely?

isn't he still employed by BT?

Sure, but lets say he had for an example, a tax bill of £2m a year. Then some bright eyed tax adviser gets his claws in and says, "give me £500k and I can make that go away" All legal, AT THE TIME.

8 years later HMRC rule that said scheme was actually illegal/evasion, and ask James for 8 x £2m, plus interest, in tax. Now. And if half his wealth had been given to his ex in a divorce, plus a % of his future earnings. Not hard to see that happening.

This is very true, I earn a lot more than I did at 18, still spend every penny, I do have a mortgage now mind, luckily for me my lifestyle will see me dead long before retirement age, so i will have the last laugh
