It's a cultist self-defence mechanism. Anyone against the cult has something wrong with them, as the cult itself is sacrosanct and right in all things.

They are not fans; they are a cult.

I agree totally with this and its disturbing though not surprising that they are nearly all like that a bit even the more "balanced" ones. They get their excuses in before even mild criticism is implied. Then when the wheels come off, their perverse sense of morality comes into it..."ah yeah but we didn't throw it away really cos : if we'd have had those five penalties we should have got/we hadn't hit the post ten times/ etc our points tally would have well kept us top so really we did win the league didn't we....'ey...ey...didn't we ?" The more I think about them actually, the more alien I think they are.

In just the space of a few months Gerrard could preside over costing Liverpool the league and captaining an England team out of the World Cup in the first week.

That should seal his legacy.

didn't realise england hand CR last. it will very probably be a dead rubber

There's a big difference.

Take Hodgson with Barkley for example. We all got a bit annoyed by it, but even the most biased of us would admit Barkley has issues in utilising possession at times and needs to further develop that aspect of the game.

The cult disavows all criticism as unfounded - they basically elevate the player to Godlike status and see them as simply perfect. Therefore, pointing out a mistake is "bitter", pointing out he's overhyped is "bitter", everything is "bitter".

Lord it's so hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way... (let's face it: how many worldies do they claim wear a Liverpool shirt? - 1. Gerrard "the best midfielder in the past 10 years", 2. Lucas "thEdite best defensive midfielder in the world" 3 and 4 . SAS "the most lethal partnership in world football" - oh and Agger and Skrtl "the best centre back partnership this side of Jupiter" and Mignolet (who replaced a "world class keeper" (one who just sits on the bench for his country)).. Somehow this plus the "best 21 year old anywhere" (Coutinho) and the incredible Sterling and it's barely credible that, with 9 of the best players in the world, they haven't won everything in sight.)
