ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Last season Gerrard attempted 350 long balls and Henderson 180, whereas Yaya Toure attempted 198. The outcry for England to play the 'Liverpool way' hid the fact that they have become a long ball team. The 'Liverpool way' is to sit deep, give it to Gerrard and hoof it to Suarez and Sturridge and catch teams on the break. International football is a bit different with better defenders and mangers that deploy better tactics than a lot of Premier League managers. The Italians got caught out once with a quick counter attack, Sturridge goal, then changed tact to stop the counter, they sat deeper and brought on players to get in position to stop it. Uruguay's defence played deep and tried to hit England on the counter. England needed players with guile and skill to break down the Uruguay's defence, something Gerrard and Henderson both lack. Therefore it was a very pedestrian performance by England playing the 'Liverpool way'. Gerrard still attempted 23 long balls during the Italy and Uruguay games.

Spot on, even I could noticed this and I'm a women. The worse thing is Roy is tryin to convince Gerrard not to retire and to be Captain in the Euros. what a joke

Considering his team's performances at World Cup 2010, Euro 2012 and now World Cup 2014, do you think there's an argument to be made for Gerrard being England's worst ever captain?

Gerrard's passing contribution this WC was restricted to long diagonal balls out wide and on every occasion nothing was made of them because the defences were well set. The very definition of a 'Hollywood ball' - pointless and for the camera. Never did he use one to isolate a defender one on one with a teammate.

He won't retire, not yet. Especially after that shambles.

For all his talk about ' team this ' and ' team that ', box head is all about himself. The last 3 months of his career have been an absolute train wreck. He won't retire from the international stage until he feels himself and England are back at a decent level. Slippard will want to retire having surpassed all for appearances in an England shirt.

Jagielka should have tracked Suarez's run....he was caught nowhere. Having said that, if Gerrard had not been so badly caught under the ball then it wouldn't have happened

The sewer rat: he's defo gone this summer hasn't he? I mean, CL footy at Liverpool and new contract bollocks aside, he's not sticking round at that pit if Barcelona are seriously enquiring.

Last summer, despite pushing for it, it all looked too desperate - and he didn't quite have enough performance wise or the market pull for a big hitter like Madrid/Barca/Bayern to stump up big cash for (especially after the money already spent on Bale/Neymar). This summer I just dont see those hurdles. I'd be astounded if he gets past the end of August as a Liverpool player.

The most telling thing for me wasn't even his shambolic 'leadership' on the pitch, it was his absolute cowardice in sending Jags out to face the TV cameras in his place. I thought he was supposed to love TV cameras? The man is an absolute sh*thouse of a captain, about as inspiring as a lettuce.

Lettuce and Gerrard in the same post.......

@bluejock

For the second goal? Cahill was marking Sewer rat not Jags.
Yep.
Two CBs. One goes forward to attack any ball the DM isn't getting. The other drops (or stays deeper at least) to pick up a runner. Very early lesson in defending that is.
The ball was left of centre, so that sides CB (Jags) should step forward to intercept. He can't know that Gerrard is going to attempt a header he was woefully out of position for.
