ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Your honours list, which admittedly has a few.

As I read it, the team that qualified for the 98-99 ECL as English champions were Arsenal. You qualified for the competition you won as runners up.

Yep you and @roydo are bang on, I was getting confused myself. IF by my rules, we wouldn't have the 99 trophy now. And that's how it should be, IMO. (I was just saying that we were champions of England when we lifted the European Cup that year, Pool were FIFTH in England!)

Ah I see what you guys are saying!

Yeah, I'd agree on that then. I still stick by my point, ONLY the champions should be allowed to play in the CHAMPIONS league.

This runners up nonsense is silly. Look at Arsenal - they won't get near the thing, as soon as they meet Bayern or Barca, they are out.
You could say the same about Basel and they are Swiss champions.

On reflection, I think UEFA's premier cup should have the best European clubs in it. So if that means 3 or 4 clubs qualify for it from the strongest leagues, then at least when you do win it, it is a cup contested by the elite. Ok, you might get the occasional fluke, but on balance, winning the thing with perhaps Real Madrid/Barcelona/Bayern/Utd not even being it is not really a measure of being the Champions of Europe is it?

Not quite sure on your point to be honest........

As far as I'm concerned, the only way to bring some equality back to the european stages is to take into account the debt of owners, leveraged and none leveraged into FFP.

Gotta say, I love how there's a United fan on here moaning about how money has ruined the game....................

Now that they've made millions of pounds from Europe its fine to stop all the others from getting in. Bloody no marks. Not champions, no entry.

Tell you what, what if they were to order that every penny made from this bloated, falsely advertised, corrupt competition be returned and distributed evenly amongst all the teams in the respective leagues. All of the advertising revenue that has been gained, purely from the exposure of European competition that the CL has created, is returned and spread to grass roots? I reckon your board/owners/shareholders would be the first to cry outrage

The trouble being that, the CL wouldn't be as attractive to sponsors if there was only one of Real Madrid or Barcelona in it, or Dortmund or Bayern, that way, you wouldn't have made enough money to spend £200m in one summer. You club has a huge amount to answer for with the ruination of our game.

UHHH NURRRR MERRRRT

i just watched last 15 minutes of that game again.

you just gotta admire how Basel took all that pressure. they kept their composure wonderfully. many other team might have shelled them self and we all know what that would have ment. 2-1 win for that lot. Wonderful stuff Basel!

another thing...

i find that YNWA song massively weird, ....they started to sing it like 30 seconds before the final whistle. it was almost like someone from ivory tower would have ordered it to start...forced if you will.
It didnt feel supportive, it felt like it was ment to deny the result and whipe away the pure horror of the fact that they werent good enough. Like a cult that sprays a smokescreen infront of our eyes that halts your common sence to operate.
weird,,,so very weird.

UHHH NURRRR MERRRRT

the bit there he got really wrong, was when he called it 'Our club'

Its not theirs any more. If every one of them stopped going, Thomas Cook would still fly more in, and theyd just turn the PA sytem up to 10, from 9 before the game. Doesn't matter how much effort the infected media put into trying to tell us the atmosphere is something mythical......

Last night on ITV....... "Its footballing legend that the Kop end in full voice is harder to defend when your the away team"...... erm, not outside of Anfield it isn't.

.......... "As can be expected from these Liverpool fans, they have kept the volume up after the final whistle"........ erm, likely cause they rested their voices for 89 mins that pal.

STEEEEEVEN GERRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA.................. Wide

STEEEEEVEN GERRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA.................. Over the bar

PEEEEEEEEEENNNAAAAAAAAAAAAA ................... Oh, erm, great save by the keeper.

STEEEEEVEN GERRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAARRRRDDDDD YOU JUST KNEW IT.

anyway, back to my original point, its not their club anymore, its not owned or run, and in large parts not attended by Liverpool fans.

I wonder how many tickets Thomas Cook took for that game last night? Same number as the Real game? Not bloody likely

In fact, the whole process of a United fan giving it all this is very reminiscent of Camerons "We're in it together speech"

Liverpool never look or sound more insecure than when they start telling everyone how marvellous they are; there is nothing more small-time in football than confirmation of your own sense of greatness'.

Loved that bit.

Is Bascombe mental, telling everyone how great LFC are is LFC's main purpose for existing. Hence their tosspot ex player pundits infesting every TV and radio station sports show.

That is a profoundly annoying phenomemnon, except of course on occasions like last night, Crystanbul or the Slip when they are all forced to describe to everyone what they are seeing.
