ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

I suppose the thought to take away from last nights game is that that may well be their last champions league game for at least another few years. And for them to go out the way they did with 3 defeats, 2 draws and a win in the 95th minute against the minnows, well hardly anything to take pride in.

Agreed. Both the CL and Europa Leagues are farcical these days.

I'd have:

CL being the competition that winners of ALL domestic leagues and cups enter. Finishing 2rd, 3rd and 4th in the league doesn't make you a Champion of anything (see Liverpool.)

So in England, the Premier League and FA Cup winners enter it (NOT the League Cup as nearly all other countries only have 2 domestic trophies to win, their league & cup). Also, the Europa League winners would enter it.

The CL format would be knockout straight away, 2 legs all the way until the final, which is ONE leg. No seedings either, a straight-up draw, just like the FA Cup has. If Chelsea get drawn against Real Madrid straight away in the first round, great - it would breath some life into the competition which, let's be honest, is pretty boring until the knockouts. The group format is a joke (Chelsea v minnows isn't fun for anyone, not even the zombies at Silent Bridge.)

If you get knocked out, you're out. You go back to England and try and win the league to get back in.

The Europa League should be renamed and revamped. All teams that finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in their respective countries would enter it. Again, no seedings - straight up knockout football. The competition would become prestigious again with the likes of Arsenal and either Chelsea or Man City / Real Madrid or Barcelona playing in it every season. The winners of it get a CL place the next season. More money for people who get into it, too. Share it more equally with CL teams.

Don't award finishing 5th and 6th in the league with Euro footy. It's a joke and it only hinders the teams that actually make it (see Swansea last season, really messed their season up playing Thurs and then Sun every other week with a small squad.)

Make me UEFA President - I'll get it into action.
Yes, though additionally I'd have the league winners entering a round after the cup winners (bit like FA Cup 3rd Rd) in the CL. Even the winners of the Albanian league deserve a better chance than the FA Cup winners, imo.

Don't know why anyone is worrying about meeting them in the latter stages.

Both sides will be getting turfed out long before then.

On reflection, I think UEFA's premier cup should have the best European clubs in it. So if that means 3 or 4 clubs qualify for it from the strongest leagues, then at least when you do win it, it is a cup contested by the elite. Ok, you might get the occasional fluke, but on balance, winning the thing with perhaps Real Madrid/Barcelona/Bayern/Utd not even being it is not really a measure of being the Champions of Europe is it?
I doubt this was even a viable perception 30 years ago. You won the league, and you played against other league winners. The idea that team who didn't win the league, but were considered 'better' than someone who did (from a lesser league), should be included has only come about since they expanded the CL to include extra teams. The format of the Champions Cup was perfectly fine as it was.

Maybe if they'd never called it the 'Champions' League, no-one would be complaining now!

...red in work just sent me an e-mail;

'1st half was one of the worst performances I have ever seen - that says a lot when I think of when Hodgson was here. Honestly, we could've been 5 down at half-time. Looking around me they were all just staring at the pitch in shock. I think he only has a few games now and they will bin him, patience is not something FSG appear to have based on Red Sox management changes'.

Gotta say, I love how there's a United fan on here moaning about how money has ruined the game....................

Now that they've made millions of pounds from Europe its fine to stop all the others from getting in. Bloody no marks. Not champions, no entry.

Tell you what, what if they were to order that every penny made from this bloated, falsely advertised, corrupt competition be returned and distributed evenly amongst all the teams in the respective leagues. All of the advertising revenue that has been gained, purely from the exposure of European competition that the CL has created, is returned and spread to grass roots? I reckon your board/owners/shareholders would be the first to cry outrage

The trouble being that, the CL wouldn't be as attractive to sponsors if there was only one of Real Madrid or Barcelona in it, or Dortmund or Bayern, that way, you wouldn't have made enough money to spend £200m in one summer. You club has a huge amount to answer for with the ruination of our game.

IF Fergie had gone to Everton instead of us and made you what Man Utd are today, you wouldn't be posting tripe like this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

AND I haven't ONCE complained that "Money has ruined the game." It's part and parcel OF the game now, unfortunately. That's not Man Utd's fault, it's just what it is. Blame UEFA, FIFA and the sugar daddies. Don't blame us for building something, it's not like we were nothing one minute and then super rich the next (Hello Man City/PSG).

Not saying we're without our faults mind you. But your post is way off the mark.
