All this palaver over a player who never landed the biggest trophy available for him to win in the whole of his career. Unreal.

Talent wise he's the modern era's Bryan Robson....although even Robbo landed two titles.

Has there ever been so much praise given to a more mediocre 'legend' and all round tvvat of a human being?

Hitler mate.

Stevie 'CAPTAIN' G is leaving LFC for a a final payday, a final chalenge, a final hurrah to his career......GOOD LUCK to him........the man is is a diamond, a messiah, a gold statue, a cod piece in my undies, a dildo in my blue wifes fanny (she don't know that - hush - but she loves it) - a legend amongst amongst legends. No EPL tile ? So fecking what? This man lifted the Champions League Trophy in Istanbul !!!!!! Stick your fecking your fecking EPL up yer fecking arse !! (although I'd love to win it). You got Stevie. (RAWK)

How long before we got the hour long documentary about his 'glorious career' - he's not even retiring for heavens sake, he's gonna continue playing and some dipstick across the pond will pay him a fortune to stroll around and take penalties.
He's been there for penalties and also they've played for soft free kicks on the angles of the penalty area for years as he can whip in a vicious curling ball with pace which only ever needs a touch(Sturridge 3-3 derby as a case in point)but thats just about it as regards to his game nowadays.

A fine description of stevie g.

Eddie Munster best Liverpool player of all time. Dalglish, Rush, Keegan, Kennedy (R) ALL better players than him.

He's about Souness class. Good but no cigar.

Interesting. Since Captain Fantastic will be leaving the rs without winning the league, it's no longer a gauge on how good a player actually was.

Giggs, Scholes and Gary Neville were all 'one club men' and stayed to the end of their careers at Manu. I'm sure they could have picked up a big money mercenary payday but decided not too. I don't remember Sky, or the other media outlets making '20' one off specials about 'how this 'legend' gave his all for his home town club for love not the big payday'. There is nothing more nauseous than the way the RS media dominated media and their sycophantic hangers-on set the agenda to 'promote' LFC and their players.

If Stevie me hadn't told the world he was leaving at the end of the season, it would have been very hard, even for the RS dominated media, to not ask questions about the officiating at Anfield. Where in the last week we have had a FIFA world cup liner, Mallarky, miss a hand in the face of a Swansea player when he was a foot away. And how a referee could not see that the ball hit the Leicester player Morgan in the face. As well as the second penalty that was given because the ball hit his hand and he did not move his hand to the ball.

Three incredible decisions, that have been conveniently buried with the news that the 'greatest' player that ever existed is taking the US dollar for one last multi-millions payday.

It is no gauge on how good any player is, though. A player should not have to move to a title-winning team to be considered a good player. A player should not be considered 'not-good' if he hasn't won a title.

Did anyone notice Rodgers, when asked about the possibility of bringing him back on loan at the end of the season instantly discarded it. The fall out from this has obviously been quite bitter and there is a lot of bad will there.

The fact that Gerrard’s camp are leaking stories about him not playing in Real Madrid and leaving for being “frozen out” is pure throwing the toys out of the pram. For what it’s worth I think Rodgers has acted well in all of this. He has identified Gerrard is not that essential a player to Liverpool. As a side they have looked best when he has played a marginal role (either last season to Suarez) or stuck out on the right wing by Benitez to accommodate Alonso and Mascherano.

Gerrard is a fraud. He carries on like he is a great team man who’d do anything for Liverpool but he is one of the most selfish footballers of his generation. He refused to work alongside Lampard for the good of England and he threw a strop with Benitez when he was given a more marginal role to benefit the team. A team man would have got on with it (like Milner does for example). He cry arses about, undermines the manager to get Alonso sold and himself played in his preferred position. This selfish attitude carries onto the pitch. He plays without any positional discipline or care for players around him. He charges about while leaving gaps, takes all set plays, fires shots from ridiculous positions (the occasional one with which goes in).

As his legs went he decided he’d become a defensive midfield player. But he didn’t do what say a Barry or a Roy Keane did and adapt his game to suit the role. He made the team adapt to him. Lucas and Allen were shelved. Henderson played central midfield to “do his running” and Sturridge and Stirling were expected to do running for his long punts up the pitch. Suarez basically bailed him out (like Alonso did before him).

There is a reason why Alex Fergusan said he was never a great player. He was a good player who did everything, so every once in a while would do an amazing thing. Liverpool pandering to his needs meant they have never won the league. For Kopites that is some glorious irony, it adds to the thrill of the story but it’s very clear that Liverpool’s decision to build it’s team around Gerrard has cost them trophies.

You build your team around two types of player. Either a Scholes/Pirlo/Alonso type who can bring the best out of others around them. OR a Cantona/Suarez/Messi who are so good on their own they win titles. Gerrard is definitely not the first. He wanted to be the second but was never of that calibre. Rodgers has made the right decision. He can’t wait to get rid of him, as he’s a millstone around the clubs neck. Gerrards arrogance has greatly unbalanced Liverpool.

Where Rodgers walks a fine line, is the common sense discourse makes no sense to Liverpool fans. They won’t have it. They haven’t won the premier league because of a conspiracy, referees, Manchester United, Bad luck and theatre. Gerrard is the anti-hero in this opera. If Rodgers is seen to be ditching him too willingly his own pantomime that he has created will come falling down around him. Gerrard is still going to have his allies within the club. Carragher has recently attacked Rodgers. The arrogance of Gerrard is unlikely to stop when he stops playing for them. He won’t rest until Rodgers is outed and like Dalglish before him I’d wager good money he’d fancy a crack at managing them. It’s going to be a fun few months to see if Rodgers can see this out.

Dalglish knows if the results turn again, all he'll have to do is say he will "bring Gerrard back" and the romantic Neanderthals of the kop will see that as some sort of dream ticket. No amount of dossiers on football Rodgers has will ever be enough to truly overcome the nostalgia of the Reds. He will feel like Columbus preaching to the flat earthers, and his flawed dossier will cut little tract.

And Rodgers is 3 or 4 bad results away from the 'rodgers out' headlines from Carragher in the Mail and Echo, Mikey Quinn on Talksport and Thompson on Sky leading the mob. There has been a power struggle between Gerrard and Rodgers. And Rodgers received the backing of FSG after the results against Leciester, Swansea, Burnley and Bournemouth reserves lifted the doom and gloom from around LFC. This can quickly change.

Yes in a longwinded way this is what I am getting at. It’s rare you see Liverpool fans split on anything, as they tend to use a process of “othering” ie you blame all of your problems on someone else. It unifies them.

Rodgers on this issue is basically right. Gerrard can only play as a defensive midfielder now, and he refuses to adapt his game to suit the role. It is arguably the most unselfish role on the pitch; you sacrifice your own game to essentially make it easier for your defenders to earn plaudits. This was never going to be in “clubman” Gerrards repertoire.

Rodgers already has two more adept defensive midfield players (particularly Lucas). But as you say he is on thin ice currently. I’m not sure he has the goodwill to remove Gerrard particularly if Gerrard turns on him. The press reports of a loan back to Liverpool have obviously been planted by him. If he starts struggling again without Gerrard in the team it will be hard for him to withstand that.

Some good posts in here - spot-on.

I disagree about Gerrard playing as a DMF though. He's terrible all over the pitch now. His game was based on power and charging about the pitch. He isn't an intelligent player like Scholes or Pirlo i.e. he can't sit deep and dictate the game like they could/can.

He is finished at the top level which is why he's considering the MLS.

I percieve the whole thing differently.

I think people have had words in his ear for the past few months about it. the MLS is not one big payday at all, it is the last time he can star for a team and be the hero. Cant do it at liverpool anymore after this year so go over there, the weathers better, bit of money and chance to still be the star
