ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

Torres has done them up like a kipper. Quote YNWA-tick. Praise slippy G as the best player ever- tick. Say Liverpool fans are the best in the world- tick. All is forgiven. Sorry we burnt effigies of you la, get him back on loan Rodgers.

I have kind of missed the stupidity of this charity match. Judging from some facebook posts I've seen some of them seem to have taken this match seriously. I just thought trying to make it into a competitive match was like WWE wrestling, all a big show, but it seems some of them have really fallen for it, like it was an audition for "stevie". Madness.
It really is that simple too. There's nothing the cult like more than a repentant sinner.

That charity match: all for good causes etc, yes. But I dont think I've seen a more cynical manipulation of a charity event ever. It was basically an ego trip for Gerrard and Carragher, putting themselves front and centre gathering the praises of a group of star players who they can rely on to fawn over them. Gerrard's ego in particular is approaching the size of a small planet and needs constant stoking now he's rapidly in decline.

If LFC did all that and allowed that backslapping session to take place whilst the charities in question received the money and quietly slipped out the backdoor it could almost be forgiven. But they actually ruthlessly exploited them: their OS was littered with the different charity bosses being videoed and being made to say how great LFC are and what an unforgettable day it's been blah blah blah.

What seems to have happened here, imo, is that Everton's EitC has been seen as a roaring success - garnering the club very decent publicity - and this shower of johnny come lately ****s have thought it'd be a good idea to get in there and have some of that themselves. But whereas EitC largely do things on the quiet and get on with it, these shameless media whores have to have the world sit up and take notice of their largesse and praise them to the rafters for it.

It was a typical example of the classless and crass nature of that club. They've always been shabby and they always will be shabby.

I hope the Italians in that stadium boo any Liverpool player tonight. It'd be understandable.

They're fair game because they represent an organisation that couldn't give a flying **** about the disaster that their own fans caused and have been busily covering those same fan's tracks for years by officially explaining things in the 'context' of their experiences previous to Heysel - 'suffering' the heavy handedness of European police and ultras (Italian ones in particular).

I was pointed toward this old article this week because of the Wreath thing.

What an utterly despicable person Phil Neal is for this, I was literally speechless

Phil Neal
Then: Liverpool captain, 34
Now: Merseyside Radio commentator

I'd rather forget that night. It was an ordeal. But, Jamie, why should I help you out? I'm helping you pay your mortgage [by talking to you about Heysel]. When people ask me for my view, they usually have to pay for it. You're asking for my help for nothing. To pay your mortgage, Jamie. I mean, what do you want from me?

I just thought that as the captain of Liverpool football club on that night at Heysel it would be good to hear your view?

Yes but what do you want from me? If I talk to you for a few minutes, then I'm helping you pay your mortgage and what am I getting in return? Do you know what I mean?

Well, I have been to Italy and talked with some of the families of the victims and they say that the trophy should be given back by Juventus to commemorate what happened.

About Juventus? Why are you asking me? Why are you asking someone on the Liverpool side? Juventus made amends very soon. Ask them ... Jamie I'm helping you pay your mortgage. People who want my views pay.

I'm sorry, but everyone else I have spoken to has ...

Great. So you've spoken to people, you've got your views. You've got your Liverpool view, but if you want mine for free, well people pay for them.

Oh and their fans are no better either

Thankfully with a little help from St Luis their mask has slipped considerably in the past few years and the media and footballing world have been revolted by what they seen underneath.

Greatest fans in der werld indeed.

Exactly this; the EitC has been a huge success, not over concerned with the media praise, but going about it doing a fine job. Even received gratitude from that blurt of a PM we have in Parliament, but still it was good that its work had been noticed at a high level.

Not only was this charity match an absolute shocker of "oh look at us, how great are we" media cry, it was a massive explotation by LFC of the fans, not concerned about the local lads, it was used as a way of getting all those loveable whoppers from down south, Norway, Japan and where ever else to splash the cash through the tills.

Horrible, horrible club

That line from Alan Kennedy too.....

"People talk about the penalty that settled the game. Whether Gary Gillespie's foul on [Zbigniew] Boniek was inside or outside the penalty box. But we could not win that match. Juventus fans had died and we were conscious that everyone would blame the club."

Wow, blaming their loss of a European final on the fact they took pity on a club who's fans had just been murdered by theirs.

Class.

It's like when that bent GK of theirs on the night, Grobbelaar, was interviewed about Heysel and was as much concerned with the result on the night as the carnage. Grumbling that he could have had another winners medal if everyone had just focussed on the game itself after they blew the whistle. The documentary I saw suggested he wasn't alone in that thought either.

It's fair to say that all-conquering Liverpool team of the early 80s were a weird bunch of joyless people obsessed to the point of inhumanity about getting a result.

And football just isn't that important.

Yes this to a tea. I am overall quite cynical of the concept of charity (though many do an essential job) but there is a quite dignity with how you should conduct yourself while doing charity. Acknowledging it's not all about yourself raising awareness for the charity and really making the act/day all about those involved. It's very hard to see how what they were doing fits into that one iota, it is the complete opposite.

They are the loudmouthed dreaded next door neighbour "loadsamoney" type. The annoying bloke on a night out nobody likes who shouts their successes over everyone else. A spiv basically.

They are clearly fearful of the good work we are doing with EITC. The problem is while they try to counter it they have no real idea how to do so effectively. It's like asking Bill Gates to empathise with his cleaning staff, he would have no idea. We are doing brilliant work, grounded in the community putting the community central to it and Everton a very distant second. They have organised a cheesy as event, invited the top echolons and parachuted fans in from all over to enjoy the spectacle. Meanwhile the next day the same problems are occurring which if they'd have taken one moment to stop waffling on about themselves about, they would be aware of.

I have no problem with "stevie" and "carra" having a stupid friendly match. It shows the mental age of about a 10 year old and is rather cringey but leave them to it. Likewise if 40k whoppers want to go and watch it, have a singalong to YNWA again fair enough, but what sad lives they lead. But as you say when they try to link it to the local community, it is an insult.

A final mention for the fans though. The way some of them are going on it was the most enjoyable match they've seen in ages. The problem is, to your out of town kopite this is as good as it gets. They get to see Carra and Stevie managing. All their great players again in red. No away fans to counter their views or narrative. Liverpool are bound to win. This is the perfect day.

The fact that it is not real is lost on them. That is what football should look like. They are a cult there's no doubt in that. But I think this episode basically just shows how similar to WWE American fans they are. I am amazed they have taken it seriously. Can you imagine what would happen is Hibbert and Osman tried to pull a similar stunt at Goodison!?
