Rob Jones your thinking Roydo. I'm thinking Mike Marsh or Tanner, though I'm sure it was Marsh.

Yeah Rob Jones. Looked a player when he started as well, Tanner was a Bristol lad I recall. They got him for about £10k from Bristol Rovers, but just slotted in to the side and looked really comfortable. The story down here was that they signed Nick Tanner to help them sign another Rovers player, cant remember who, who was the next big thing.

And Bristol Rovers at the time had a habit of producing decent players, strikers in particular.

Yep Rob Jones looked a decent right back at the time.

Take the actual player out of the question, but just how big an ego/nerve must any 20 year old have to ask, in all seriousness apparently, one of the most famous football clubs around, (yeah, shoot me, but they are), to be paid £180,000 A WEEK?

It beggars belief.
I know what you mean, but Sterling himself will be nowhere near the negotiation process, it will all be done by his agent. Sterling probably knows as much detail as we do

...it is amazing how times change. I can imagine that in this day and age, blokes who even have a career outside top flight are in a strong financial position. I remember some years ago a local player who had retired through injury signing a non-league contract paying £700 per game. He received offers to play league football again but couldn't afford to repay the insurance.
Friend of mine Tony, had a decent career at QPR ( no 2 to Seaman ) , then moved to Milwall, also welsh international , no 2 to Nev at the time...anyway, he suffered badly with problems with his fingers keeping breaking... he retired injured from pro football and moved to the states for a while as a player/coach..... whilst there some lad in uni took a close interest and decided to invent a special glove with built in splint protection in the fingers... this enabled Tony to play competitive again. Came back to uk and signed for Dagenham who were non league at the time, he combined playing with a coaching role at arsenal @Dithering Dougie .....anyways, Dagenham won promotion to the football league but as Tony had already received an insurance payout he had to pay a large lump sum to allow him to play as a pro again. Random story I know but there you go.

Maybe he isn't really all that greedy and just wants to get the hell out of there before blobfish runs him into the ground and he's permacrocked by the age of 24.

Yeah, sadly. Saw Tom Ritchie this afternoon, played for Bristol City and Sunderland, (and a Scottish International) when City were in Div 1.

Posting letters for the Royal Mail.

Nor sure Raheem will need a second income when he draws his pension.

I think Neil Webb, once an England international in the not too distant part, is a postman nowadays as well.

Was that an ex Liverpool player eggs as I seem to remember one of them getting crocked and then having a decent non league career and not being able to come up with the team he got promoted with as he had been paid insurance for his injury

....it was, Maccavennie. He's back with the Reds coaching now I think. He was outstanding in non-league and as you say, played a key part in promotion but couldn't come up with that side.
