ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

As dark as it was I dont know if it is the darkest ? there have been events since then such as fans murdered in Egypt, National team bus opened fire on in Africa with players slaughtered.

These are terrible things too, but Heysel was caused by fans attacking fans and causing mass death, no political idealism to hide behind.
In the biggest show piece European final. That it beyond comprehension.

I have never understood how they could try and blame it on NF/Chelsea. Everton played a Euro final only days earlier. No trouble at all.

that guardian article with quotes from Phil Neal regarding heysel is unbelievable..

Phil Neal
Then:
Liverpool captain, 34
Now: Merseyside Radio commentator

I'd rather forget that night. It was an ordeal. But, Jamie, why should I help you out? I'm helping you pay your mortgage [by talking to you about Heysel]. When people ask me for my view, they usually have to pay for it. You're asking for my help for nothing. To pay your mortgage, Jamie. I mean, what do you want from me?

I just thought that as the captain of Liverpool football club on that night at Heysel it would be good to hear your view?

Yes but what do you want from me? If I talk to you for a few minutes, then I'm helping you pay your mortgage and what am I getting in return? Do you know what I mean?

Well, I have been to Italy and talked with some of the families of the victims and they say that the trophy should be given back by Juventus to commemorate what happened.

About Juventus? Why are you asking me? Why are you asking someone on the Liverpool side? Juventus made amends very soon. Ask them ... Jamie I'm helping you pay your mortgage. People who want my views pay.

I'm sorry, but everyone else I have spoken to has ...

Great. So you've spoken to people, you've got your views. You've got your Liverpool view, but if you want mine for free, well people pay for them.

what does he mean "Juventus made amends".

Amends for what?

Question for the RAWK observers.

Any Heysel talk on there?

I guess if there is they are blaming dem cowardly Eyetalians for running when their lids attacked dem.

I see the whole honourable transfer dealing thing hasnt extended to them not tapping up a player a few days before he plays in an FA Cup Final.

RAWK posters on Heysel:

  • "It was a while before I asked my brother anything about it but his story was consistent with the other stories on here. Our fans out of order but provocated badly. Something he told me that nobody has mentioned is that Juventus fans had been poking knives through the wire fence. He'd also mentioned Chelsea fans. He said on the night before the match he was sitting in a bar and some lads had hung up a Union Jack with Chelsea on it. He asked them what they were doing here and they'd said something along the lines of, we're here for the fun and games if you know what I mean?"

  • "Fan violence is wrong and of course can never be tolerated, but......It seems the real issue here was the state of the stadium, which sounds like it was absolutely unbelievably run down and deteriorating. This seems to be the crux of the issue, along with the lack of policing of tickets and fans coming into the stadium and lastly the mindboggling arranging of opposition fans within the stadium, many far too close to each other than they should have been. If it hadn't been for the state of the stadium and the walls literally crumbling, surely no one would have died that night? Am I getting this right? If so, I just can't understand why this club was made the scapegoat for everything that happened."

  • "Peter Robinson point...a while back, offering his memories on the fixture and the events that unfolded. It's interesting to see him reference the "southern accents" that he encountered that day as well, along with the belief that a lot of the National Front contingent used to travel abroad with English clubs. Certainly seems to back up the account of others in here."

Will they EVER face up to that crime and and put the blame where it belongs? I know some are coming round to address it, shamed into it for the most part, but there's no definitive mea culpa as they rightly demand of the police over Hillsborough.

Good piece in the Guardian concerning this:

This is insane. The real issue Kopite Numpty is that LFC fans charged the Juve fans. So what they were provoked, they charged. His comment at the end - there would not have been any deaths if the stadium was in decent condition - UNBELIEVABLE!!!! And the reason they were made a scapegoat - it was their fault. If drunk Liverpool fans had not charged opposing fans - there wouldn't have been any deaths.

They're like a drunk driver that blames the pedestrian they've ploughed into for crossing in front of them................30 years on & they're still pished.

Were they even? From most neutral accounts I've read it was pretty much one way.

Anyway the last few pages are making my blood boil, the [Poor language removed] they come out with really is unbelievable. There's ignorance and then there's denial and being complete [Poor language removed].

No such animal. Those who witnessed it as a neutral are in fact, the very same chelsea fans/ NF who caused it all.

Simple as that.

I'm listening to Radio M'side right now: it starts off by blaming the wall for it.

You couldn't make it up.

saying they were "provoked" has been a Kopite parrot cry from the getgo.

There exists no evidence that I know off which substantiates it.
