There's a couple of snidey remarks in there he would have been best advised to leave out. As much as they paper over it, ironic as it is, their own bitterness shines through everything they do. Let's say a dozen people start a fight outside a pub. The police witness it and stand by, picking off the weakest of those who are involved - these people now back off. The rest continue to fight. One person lands a punch and the guy he hits falls to the floor, bangs his head and subsequently dies from his injuries. It's self-evident that, despite a certain level of negligence on the part of the authorities to stop the fighting, the person causing the death is culpable. No amount of platitudes to blame the police for failing to act can reduce the guilt of those committing the crime.
