No, only Utd winning EL and Leicester winning CL would've seen 4th go into the EL. Utd winning the EL just gives the PL 5 CL spots (and gives us EL group stages).

You can see it playing out....Utd and City overtake the RS then Utd win the EL and the RS sneak in again......

nah, that's not how it works, the rule is only in place because the RS "needed" to defend it, but hadn't actually qualified so they had to make a new spot, that's basically what it is for europa winner, but if united will have qualified anyway, they don't need to enforce that automatic entry aspect. I presume the runners-up of the europa wouldn't go through to CL in their place, like we do with FA Cup runners-up?

not sure it works like that : if Utd are in the top 4 (displacing Liverpool), then even if they win EL, only 4 teams go into CL. Only if Utd win EL and are outside top 4, will 5 teams go into CL (and 2 into Europa).

Nor me.

I am pretty sure if United win the EL and finish fourth the fifth placed team will not go into the CL.

That's correct. If United finish fifth and win the EL, then the RS get CL but have to play in the qualifier (Villarreal, anyone?), while the other four get into the group stages.

Does the fourth placed team not have to play in a qualifier any old way?

(Though that would not apply if the team finishing fourth also won the EL, which is possible for United)
