Of course. It's one of the things that muddies the waters for people, I think. But just because they're funny, doesn't make them alright. (And I don't believe it is "wrong" to laugh at them, to find them funny. It's not the effect they have on the individual listener that is important here, it is the effect they have on an oppressed body of people).

Oh of course it doesn't make them alright. But it's not alright when little kids fall over and don't realise they're hurt for a few seconds either, that's funny too. I think part of the humour is that you're not meant to laugh. Strangely enough I've heard ones about slavery and the KKK and stuff before and just thought 'erm that's not funny at all, too far'. Suppose there's different levels.

And that's okay, is it? I can't really see much of a difference.

There's no real definition or official body of people who are 'camp' or 'girly' to offend, though, whereas if you're gay you're gay. So I think it's offensive to call someone 'gay' when they're straight as a slur, insinuating that there's something wrong with being gay, but I don't think there's anything wrong with saying someone is camp or girly.

I have "friends" who I play nerdy online games with.

The Croatians think that calling me English trash is an insult, I call them Serbs in return, they get mad.

Who wins?

The Croats because if they look down they can actually see their own cocks rather than just belly?

No but seriously, fining someone for using gay as an insult is stupid.

Both and neither. In your nerdy world, nobody holds any real upper hand. Your life isn't really affected by the insults.

How about this though: You live in a world populated mostly by gay men and women. That seems to the the norm (we'll ignore the reproduction issues here). You yourself are heterosexual and would love to be accepted as such except that you can tell from your mates' "friendly banter" that to be straight, even though they all joke about it, is somehow a bit unacceptable. For a start, you keep hearing the phrase "That's so straight!"

So you keep quiet, a bit ashamed of being this deviant. This straight guy. You have to live you life in the shadows because it's just too much hassle to reveal your true sexuality.

As great an overlord as I would make, I'd rather not become the offical voice of all gays who gets wheeled out here colin powell style as if I somewhow represent all homosexuals. Even I only agree with myself half the time, to be honest.
