I’m sure they will all think that in Editorial at The Echo. But they are forced into using that hideous platform by the Reach group (formerly Trinity Mirror) that owns them.

It’s all about rinsing as much advertising revenue out of the site as possible, the needs and desires of readers are rock-bottom.

The best model for a consumer is low-fee subscription - or if you’re lucky enough to have a readership like The Guardian, a voluntary subscription that enough people take up to keep more invasive advertising away from everyone.*

But both of those are really hard for small regional newspaper sites.

I really feel for them, it’s a tough gig.

That makes sense regarding the mirror comment.

I’m drawn into to paid news, as a few people have “gifted” me some articles from various outlets they pay for where you can send upto 3 stories a week free to friends etc.

Some of the journalism is fantastic, a polite reminder that well researched and balanced informative journalism still exists… you just have to pay for it.

I’m tempted but everything these days seems to be subscription based when I’ve got enough already. Might bin off the kids Disney. Ha!

Their articles are often quoting other sources - absolute joke of a publication who’ve spent years not holding kenwright and co to task.

I googled that out of interest and it threw up a few of his articles. Christ Almighty, the no-class eejit is absolutely vile with the nasty views and bile he spews out about us regularly.

The imbecile probably thinks he's OK doing so because it's an Irish paper. I always knew he was a thick, inarticulate GS in the Echo/local radio...add coward now too.
