2022/23 Ellis Simms

Don't disagree. He's also playing a role in a team chasing promotion to the Prem which is more than Gykoeres is doing at Coventry.

Hes a better choice than Cannon to have and even if we bring another striker in, given Calvert lewins fitness we should be recalling him anyway.

Coventry are 3 points behind Sunderland with a game in hand.

This is all hindsight, no way of knowing how effective he would have been. Frank didn't know Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be injury hit the way he has. Apart from the Bournmouth games we have competed well in all the games we have played.

….its not hindsight. When DCL was first injured I posted that big muscle injuries often blight a players career. Many of us predicted he’d become fragile and we should consider selling or at least having an effective alternative option.

Many on here also posted at the time how daft it was to send Simms on loan given the vulnerability of DCL.

If us lot are saying that over the past 12 months, it’s certainly not hindsight & folk at the club should’ve seen what was patently obvious. They have been negligent, there is no doubt about that.

Also worth adding that playing as a striker in a promotion chasing side and coming to a side a division up but fighting for relegation are completely different contexts.

Imagine how many chances a game he gets at Sunderland in the Championship compared to what he'll get here in the Premier League. It's a really big ask for the lad to come in and be the guy that fixes this team. Doesn't convince me as a fan, and not confident it's going to do the player much good either.

Hopefully it all works out but I'm not sure.

I try to get to the fundmentals of any question. We don't have much money, and we have a board who will not take remedial action to reolve this situation.

On Simms, I'll try to put some positives.

1) He has scored 7 in 17 in the championship, for a reasonable team. Getting a goal every 162 minutes. In Scotland it was a goal every 300 minutes and league 1 a goal every 152 minutes.

2) Gyokores who we have been linked with has 12 in 24. A goal every 170 minutes. He's played more than Simms, but scores at slightly worse rates.

3) Simms is 21, Gyokores is 24. They want 20m for Gyokores.

4) Simms fits the profile of what we require more. Over 6 ft, quite quick, will run in behind. May be able to link well with Maupay, who is unsuited to our more direct style.
None of this makes him ideal. His goal return is probably as good as anyone in the championship this season, alongside having a reasonable record in Scotland and a good one at league 1. For no fee, it would seem to me this is as good an option as we have available that can bedone from January 1st. This needs to be done alongide looking to get 1-2 additional in.

He started off ok but has got better and better. He’s best player in championship right now in my opinion
He’s cheat mode level - will go on to play at a very high level

I think that's my point really mate. Diallo is probably way better than what we have, so yes Simms isn't as good, but he could still do a job for us. Interestingly SImms has 7 in 17, Diallo had 6 in 18. I'm not sure we can afford to leave Simms on loan.

At the very least I fancy Simms to have a better go at that Maupay break from the other day, so I suppose that makes him an upgrade.

If you look at him as the Rondon replacement then it's hard to think of it as a mistake. Problem is we all know he's the DCL replacement.
