2022/23 Ellis Simms

Also worth adding that playing as a striker in a promotion chasing side and coming to a side a division up but fighting for relegation are completely different contexts.

Imagine how many chances a game he gets at Sunderland in the Championship compared to what he'll get here in the Premier League. It's a really big ask for the lad to come in and be the guy that fixes this team. Doesn't convince me as a fan, and not confident it's going to do the player much good either.

Hopefully it all works out but I'm not sure.

If he doesn’t immediately start getting proper minutes on the pitch then we’ve done the lad dirty from a development point of view. He seemed to be doing well and playing regular games in the Championship was exactly what he needed at this spell of his career. My gut tells me we’ve deprived him of that to bring him on in the 89th minute a few times.

But it gives us a different option to what we have, so it isn't negative.

Trying to convince yourself that this means we aren't signing another striker is a different topic. Let's wait and see on that one.

Whatever happens we need to get behind Simms. He us our player and he can score goals. He once had a season in the U18s where he bagged 32 goals in 21 games. He is averaging 1 in 3 in his senior career to date. He'll do better than anything we currently have and hopefully we sign another senior striker to help him learn and develop further.
There’s no trying to convince myself of anything. If a new striker, not a recalled kid, is not announced within the next week then the DoF and board have failed yet again.

His “youth” stats are the most irrelevant thing ever, because he’ll now be playing against actual good players.

The only thing that should happen in the forthcoming week are preparations made, by the fanbase, to protest against the slow destruction and mismanagement of this once great club.

….its not hindsight. When Dominic Calvert-Lewin was first injured I posted that big muscle injuries often blight a players career. Many of us predicted he’d become fragile and we should consider selling or at least having an effective alternative option.

Many on here also posted at the time how daft it was to send Simms on loan given the vulnerability of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

If us lot are saying that over the past 12 months, it’s certainly not hindsight & folk at the club should’ve seen what was patently obvious. They have been negligent, there is no doubt about that.

This is all true. I have been a big DCL fan, but have expressed lots of concerns over the last 12 months. Even if he stays fit, there is very little guarantee he performs at that level.

I can't see any sense in letting Simms go before getting a forward in who is 6 ft plus and can run in behind.

We need somebody as well as Simms, but honestly I see very little sense in keeping a lad out on loan, who is scoring at around 1 in 2 in the championship given our current predicament. If we had Richarlison and DCL flying that would be another matter, but we don't. This to me is complete common sense.

I try to get to the fundmentals of any question. We don't have much money, and we have a board who will not take remedial action to reolve this situation.

On Simms, I'll try to put some positives.

1) He has scored 7 in 17 in the championship, for a reasonable team. Getting a goal every 162 minutes. In Scotland it was a goal every 300 minutes and league 1 a goal every 152 minutes.

2) Gyokores who we have been linked with has 12 in 24. A goal every 170 minutes. He's played more than Simms, but scores at slightly worse rates.

3) Simms is 21, Gyokores is 24. They want 20m for Gyokores.

4) Simms fits the profile of what we require more. Over 6 ft, quite quick, will run in behind. May be able to link well with Maupay, who is unsuited to our more direct style.
None of this makes him ideal. His goal return is probably as good as anyone in the championship this season, alongside having a reasonable record in Scotland and a good one at league 1. For no fee, it would seem to me this is as good an option as we have available that can bedone from January 1st. This needs to be done alongide looking to get 1-2 additional in.
The funny thing about all the negativity towards Simms is that despite similar records people would be so much more excited about us spending a fortune on Gyokeres because Gyokeres is a player most of us have seen little of, or only the good stuff in the form of goals compilations. I’m sure that, as with Simms, there is a lot to improve and he makes a lot of mistakes, otherwise he wouldn’t be at Coventry.

Either is a long way from being a guaranteed solution to the problem, so not sure it’s worth an extra 20m on Gyokeres over Simms. Or, if we are convinced on Gyokeres, we can now offer 10m PLUS Simms.

He has a similar record to the other Championship strikers we’ve been linked with so I think it’s sensible to recall Simms before we spend money on any of them, it’s also an option that we can take on January 1st, rather than waiting until later in the window.

We still need more people in after this but if this was an option, I think we had to take it in our situation.

When you compare their records they are broadly comparable. Gyokores has scored over a longer period, but is older.
Imagine being able to have Gyokores back, with no fee from January 1st. It would be a no brainer.

I think that's probably fair mate, but the needs of the team/ckub have to take precadence at this point in time.

Of course it's hindsight, big muscle players often have blighted careers? What utter rubbish. Cristiano Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic have had wonderful prolific careers. DCL might have individual issues, if there were big worries I am sure they wouldn't have relied heavily. Lot of science now goes into all this. Simms doesn't become an option if he doesn't go out on loan and score in a competitive league. If he had stayed and made a couple of sub appearances or a league cup start and didnt do anything you wouldn't even give him a second look. It's the fact he went on loan and scored a few goals that we are even talking about him. Now we have a young in form striker because of that loan.
