England v Australia - THE ASHES

if bell fails in the second innings he has to be gone. you can't ignore bairstow in his form because it will come to and end soon. bell's failed 10/11 innings and dropped smith on 50. could have been a totally different story. It was just that one partnership and it should have been ended soonish.

bell is the reason why we're constantly 30/3. root can move up to 4, there's no difference between 4 and 5 with this england team. ballance still has a good average and is young in his career - think he needs to be given time to work through the bad patch. lyyth could be dropped but we have to give one of these openers a chance otherwise we'll be going full circle.

hard lines for cook, played pretty faultlessly and deserved a hundered. if one one of the top 5 would have asserted themselves in the same way instead of gifting aussies the wickets. that's what's so frustrating, none of these other test teams seem to be bowling us out - we just gift them over hlf the wickets. this middle/lower order is exciting though - regardless of the situation they just play their shots. moeen has to do that now.

following on may not be the worst imo. if we avoid it, their bowlers can have a little rest whilst they bat and then get charged back up to come at us again with the new ball. If we do follow on they wouldn't have that rest and won't come in as hard from the off as they did in this first innings.

bloody hell our batsmen should all be dropped! contribute nothing with the bat by throwing their wicket away and dropping catches left right and centre

Surely England should be bowling wide of off stump to a 7-2 or 8-1 field and making the Aussies find the gaps. Have to keep them out there as long as possible to reduce the amount of time required to bat.

Personally I would drop Bell and bring in another bowler (Rashid?). Move everyone up a place from 3 down.

It's like reading the match day threads in here, get a grip ladies, it's a 5 test series and 2 days of it haven't gone England's way, don't turn this cricket thread into BAWK as well, it's one of my few places of sanity.

I think this England team is more than a match for the Aussies I just think it's needs a bit of rejigging batting order wise. I put money on England to win at 9/2 and certainly not giving up yet.

That said the top of the order needs looking at and could be the key to the summer. Get Aus 2-3 down and you're really into them. Get England 2-3 down and the English innings starts. I would drop a batsman, move Root, stokes, moeen Ali up one place and bring in Rashid.
