No contest whatsoever for me.

Athletic Bilbao are my second team and I'd rather see them win the league than see England win the WC.

And yes, I'd be happy to see England win the WC.

Of course it would be even better if there was a core of Everton players but that would only happen if we'd won the league any way.

What's your opinion on German based Bayern/Dortmund/Wolfsburg fans who found winning the WC in 2014, better than winning the league? Or the Spanish Atletico/Real/Barca fans who found Spain winning the WC better?

I'm from northern Ireland and attend all there home games and some away ones. I would still take Everton winning the league over international success dunno why but international football doesn't hold the same appeal. Big international tournaments although watchable tend to attract alot of bandwagon jumpers who normally aren't that bothered about football yet every big summer tournament they are suddenly a football expert. I noticed this when we qualified for the euros two summers ago. There were some folk who laughed at me going to Northern Ireland games for years yet when we got to France the same people were jumping on the bandwagon looking tickets.

Fair enough. I've no problem with anyone getting more joy out of their national side. As they say, whatever floats you're boat.

Surprised about the Spanish to some extent. More specifically with Barcelona fans. The separatist issue has come to a head in recent months but it's certainly nothing new. Spain doesn't have a national stadium and play matches in Madrid, Seville, Valencia and some of the smaller cities around the country. However, Camp Nou hasn't hosted an international game since 1987. I'm not sure Bilbao's San Mames stadium (old or new) or Real Sociedad's Anoeta (or their old Atocha) stadium ever have. There's obviously a reason for that.

On one hand, the 3 clubs you mention are the best supported clubs in Spain. I live in Alicante and most people I meet are Madrid, Barcelona or Atlético fans. They possibly don't feel the same as a Barça fan living in Catalonia.

On the other hand possibly having such a strong core of Barcelona players is a big factor in how they identify with the national team.

I get the feeling Italian and French supporters have a similar passion for their national teams as the German and Spanish.
Funnily enough, all of those countries seem to have more obvious regional differences and separatist sentiments than England.
Maybe, paradoxically, that makes them feel more unified by their national team.

Everton regularly give me pleasure and pain in equal measure, but they're always there for me.

England is a tart you can't shake from your mind that only surfaces now and then and is only really interested in glamour players from the top few, selected by the media. Like a prick tease it beckons you in with the promise of excitement only to run off with Jordan Henderson just because he plays for the rs. Apart from when I was 2 months old it has only ever delivered disappointment.

Absolutely no contest.

Interesting. If you spoke with German based Dortmund/Bayern/Wolfsburg all, who've won the German league recently, most would agree that their World Cup win in 2014, was the best feeling, even above their league victories.

Same with Spanish Barca/Atletico/Real fans, in regards to Spanish victory at WC 2010.
They obviously don't care about their clubs all that much then. I've never understood people's devotion to the national team for any country. I get being proud of were you come from and taking pride in your national identity. I'm proud to be English, I actually like my country and I don't need to vindicate my pride by supporting a gang of bellend players for two weeks every two years when I can't stand 99.9% of them the rest of the time!

National and regional identities are complex affairs.

In my experience, most of the 'English' despise people from Liverpool, and don't really see us 'one of them'.

I'm proud (in a completely non UKIP and Tory way) of being British, but it's Everton and nothing else for me.

Palace fan says; Everton winning the league. Quite happy England never losing to the Jocks. Plus it reminds everyone of the utter lies told as the justification of creating The Greed League; that it would help England win the World Cup. How we laughed.
