English Talent and Euros

It's down to Southgate. He has an absolutely fantastic group of players to choose from.

A proper manager (an Ancelotti, for example) could win the Euros with these players, no doubt.

As good a job as he did in 2018 though, I'm not sure Southgate is a "proper manager" and will get it badly wrong at some point in the tournament, if not from the start.

Just looking at a twitter poll comparing Grealish and Foden and thought about the other young quality players we have. I know the Beckham/Gerrard era was lauded but I honestly think this generation is so much better. The only problem will be if Southgate can use them properly, if at all.

Grealish, Foden, Rashford, Sancho, Maddison, Mount. Then you have CHO, Harvey Barnes, Greenwood, DCL, Saka, Phillips & Bellingham all playing really well Not forgetting the older players like a Sterling, Kane.

Defensively, Stones looks quality this year, Chilwell, James, James Justin, Godfrey, TAA, Wan Bissaka, Lamptey & Tomori doing well at Milan. Shaw is also playing well at Utd this year.

I just think this generation it seems to be CM and CB are the areas we lack top top talent.
Goalkeeper. We lack a good Goalkeeper.

As do England. Ffs

We do have a pretty stacked squad. Think there are 3 problem positions (GK, CB, DM) and I don't think Southgate is the right man for the job either. I think this Euros will come too soon (and the World Cup next year) but in 2024 there could be some team there with lots of options (and hopefully a different manager).

There’s no decent deep lying creative midfielder. We’ll end up playing some partnership of Rice and Henderson to horrible effect. Number 10s will be shoehorned out wide and Kane will be playing even if his leg has fallen off. We’ve got one international class centreback in John Stones and we don’t have a good keeper. Just not good enough despite a plethora of decent attacking midfielders.

They will ever, ever do anything with Southgate, he's simply too naïve a manager. I will give him credit though, because he's stuck to his principles and stuck with youth and kept some big name players out, when I didn't think he'd have the bottle.

But when players like Harry Winks are getting call ups, and Grealish only gets in because of injury, you know you're out of your depth.

But to OP, i agree, best talent I can remember. But, personally, I just don't think there is that hunger to win. For all other nations, Spain, Germany, France etc... it's absolutely massive to be called up for your national team, our lads do stupid things, and don't take it seriously (drop out, go to a casino; break COVID regulations).

Agree with this, also doesn't seem to let the media pick the team\squad. Regarding Grealish, just my opinion, its only this season that he has stepped up his performance and has got in the team, keep it up and it will be hard to leave him out.

Some decisions have been beyond dubious. I think Grealish was deserving last season, and he single handedly kept Villa up, but that is just my opinion.

Kalvin Phillips having never played a top flight minute of football got in ahead of more deserving players etc... Jake Livermore was getting picked.
But the players for me, all genuinely seem to enjoy playing for him, but he just lacks what top managers have, and more recently, has resorted to some ultra negative dourness.

I don't think he'll be England manager post Euro's but wouldn't be a complete disaster to have him around the scenes still.

Agree with this mate, maybe I should have put last 18mths and not season. One thing I do like about Southgate, he tries to get a squad of players who want to play for each other, may not be the best players, but as you say, enjoy playing for him.

England is definitely producing young talent now that is as good as any other country. But I think they will not be ready to be up there with the best teams in this Euros. Most of them are too young. Euro 2024 is IMO most likely when we'll start seeing a genuinely strong England team. Not saying we'll win anything but I think we will have a good team.

England do have a decent team now, but there are lots of better ones around Europe. In the Euros England I think are set to meet France, Portugal or Germany in the last 16 if they get through the group. Can't see them beating any of them.

This would be my team for this Euros:

Pope
Trippier Stones Maguire Shaw
Mount Rice
Sterling Grealish Foden
Kane

Winks and Grealish play completely different positions.

One of Soutgate's biggest problems is Harry Kane, he is to good leave out, but he really negates England's strongest weapon, which is speed & interchangeable forwards. Kane creates a focal point that will hamper them long term

Quite the pickle for southgate, he can't drop him, but he should

On Southgate, I find the shouts to have him removed a bit odd. Took England to first WC semi final since 1990. Wins over Spain and Croatia in 2018-19 and nations league semi final. Playing good attacking football in a 4-3-3. Post COVID switched to a dour 3-4-3 and has had some uninspiring performances and results, but no harm experimenting in less important games. Judge him when the Euros come around.

I don't think Mount can play that deep in a 4-2-3-1. And if you shift those players into a 4-3-3 with Mount and Grealish box to box you've got a good attacking side but not one that can handle some of the better teams in the midfield. I think honestly swap out Henderson for Mount if you play Germany or something and that is a really competitive side though. Play the more attacking way against Scotland or whatever.
