Wow so they were back to Firenze for just 4 days, and now flying back to LDN. Won't players be now exhausted, all the flights and passport checks? IMO they should've stayed in the UK after Spain game and trained at C.Palace ground or smth.

Did you see what we did to Wimbledon in 94? If not look that up and then you'll have an insight why they wouldn't have wanted to stay in England when they are playing a final against them.

Just saw those comments by Southgate were genuine. Thought they were a wind up lol

First time I've been disappointed in him TBF

There is no reason whatsoever to say it had any link to a war. The '66 final, yes no doubt, not now.

The straight bat response should have been we all want to do well and the country wants to see us progress and go on to win something and they passionately get behind us.
Mate. You and almost everybody else on here claim, probably quite rightly, that there is an element of anti German rhetoric that goes back to the war within the English support. Especially at Wembley because there's no doubt London probably had it at least twenty times worse than anywhere else in the country.

So are you saying that Southgate should have lied and denied the existence of the link. That's not who he is.

As I said, I'm convinced he'd rather he wasn't asked the question and he's definitely uncomfortable with the subject. I'd rather a manager who speaks truthfully than one who is full of BS. We've had plenty of them, for England and Everton.

Err, I read the whole piece and commented on that.

He wasn't fed a line as a trap, he clearly understands and empathises with a notion of nationalism as one of pride at militaristic achievement.

And as for his words on inclusivity, just go back and read them and digest them:

“That inclusivity is really important for us because I think that is what modern England is,” Southgate said. “We know it hasn’t always been the case and there are historic reasons for that. But that level of tolerance and inclusion is what we have to be about moving forward.”

So, he's intimating there that there has been 'reason' for intolerance in the past because of empire and previous colonial relations (a tacit acceptance that lack of inclusivity was understandable in the post-colonial era given the imbalance between 'natives' and those arriving here from the old empire / commonwealth) AND that we should aim for a "level" of tolerance....which is ridiculous - why cant he just say we need tolerance full stop? Does he think there's a staging post or two along the way before reaching the nirvana state of full tolerance?

The feller is either thick and trying to claim a level of intellect that he just doesn't possess, or he's a dangerous fool who now reveals his hand at this late stage as a fellow traveller of the political right as he views the future and morphing into the Establishment. Or maybe it's a little of both.
More utter tosh.

I never said he was fed a line as a trap. I said he only discussed it in the article because he was asked the question. Two different things Dave. He could have denied the existence but we both know he'd be lying and you'd have called him out for that too.

The past is the past. You can't change it, he can't change it and there is nothing within that article that even intimates that he found it acceptable. But he is saying that it is wrong and not the way it should be going forward. You should be giving him credit for that not lambasting him.

I ran that post by Google translator it says:

If England win now it will only have been due to an unfair advantage
!

I would guess they don’t fly coach and have plenty of legroom!

Not read the article as it was pay for view. But I could imagine that, being an under cover reporter, he most likely went out of his way looking for trouble, otherwise there would be no story to write.

Every country and every football club has their share of thugs that follow them. It's a sad fact. But I have to say that most of the clips I've seen of the fans, in and outside of Wembley, have been extremely diverse. Families, couples, multi racial and cultural. I really think this England team is encouraging inclusivity in a way we've never seen before.

Went out of his way looking for trouble, with a 9-year old and wife in tow? Really?

Or maybe its just England supporters have a long, storied history of being bellends?

That is a lot of reading between the lines.

He is a football manager, his job is not to eloquently highlight the inequality and intolerance in this world, now or historically.

Couldn't care less what he says in response to non football matters. It is what he tells the players and in that regards we can see he has a high level of football intelligence and that is all I care about.

I suggest we get back to talking football and not doing mental gymnastics as to why Southgate should be doing a thesis on social tolerance that is and has been happening across England.

As I said I never read the article so didn't know about the wife and kid. That makes the thuggery even worse. My bad.

But the rest of my post stands. I've been on the receiving end of drunken Everton yobs in town whilst out with the missus. And a good mate of mine took his young son to the Villarreal CL qualifying game back in the day and said the Everton fans that day were so bad he was ashamed, and hasn't been to a European away game since.

All teams and nations have their fair share of thugs, and I'm sure the vast majority of people supporting England and attending Wembley don't fall into that category. That was the main point I was trying to make.

Going a bit to far there. lol
