Should have just went with that My Lovely Horse song from Father Ted. Couldn’t have done any worse..
But that got 0 points as well!. Looking back, I did like the Iceland song, even though it was weird watching that knowing it was rehearsal footage.

I actually thought it was a pretty strong year for songs - I got the impression that quite a lot of the countries actively wanted to win, potentially for increased tourism revenue for next year

I voted for Iceland - Still baffled how Switzerland got so many votes and thought Italy was just an incredibly average rock song (The Finnish rock song was actually miles better)

Watched for the first time in ages. Combined with this thread, it made up for a great evening. Agree on Switzerland and Italy. My choice would've been Lithuania with Iceland as runner up.

Is that a thing ? People visiting a country because they won Eurovision ?

Is it actually taken seriously in the rest of Europe or something ? I just assumed it was considered a bad joke like it is in the UK.

I think it's taken as seriously or as lightly as you want it to be

Personally I love it, and not just in a 'I listen to proper music but let's have a laugh at some nutters in daft costumes' sort of way

Pop music can be a beautiful, uplifting thing when done properly. I love a whole plethora of music from Deftones to DJ Shadow, REM to Refused and everything inbetween - but I'm not ashamed to say that 2 of my absolute favourite artists are Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga

People have a weird, sneering sensibility to pop music - We experience a whole host of different emotions as humans, there's enough room to enjoy all sorts of music to fit the mood

Ive no problem with good pop music, can listen to Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa etc and not get triggered by it... Eurovision though, its kinda famous for being the absolute dregs of pop music isn't it ? Hence why no famous British artists will go anywhere near it... its the number 1 way to have people not take you seriously as an artist. At least that's the reputation it used to have, ive not paid attention for many years.

When I think Eurovision I think of artist like Venga Boys lol

It's a bit of an unusual system regarding entry rules - I know that both Radiohead and Morrissey expressed an interest in representing the UK in previous years but I've no idea as to why they weren't picked - Although their styles really wouldn't suit the competition

Music snobs are the worst bores. I love Eurovision because I get to hear things that I otherwise never would.
Currently listening to that Ukrainian entry 'SHUM'. Very werid, but I like it.

That Finnish one was good also. Italy’s one was just boring and nothing memorable.

This reminds me a lot of a Canadian dj called A Tribe Called Red

He uses a lot of native music samples like inuit throat singing. SHUM grew on me.

In Europe there are many, many artists who use Eurovision as the platform to launch careers. In the Czech Republic Eurovision songs get radio airtime, the singers get promoted and we are not unusual for doing this.

@Dutch Toffee mentioned joining the thread and enjoying the competition for the first time in ages, I've followed Eurovision since I was a kid, usually with a disapproving grandmother clucking in the background. The point I've always found is, nobody, honestly, nobody but the UK reads any kind of political connotation into the voting. Greece and Cyprus always vote for each other, but really, who cares?

As a side note, a number of nations got zero public votes because of how much the Italians dominated that section of the points. Every time zero points was announced the audience inside the auditorium booed because of the lack of respect it shows the performers who have rocked up to represent their countries.

In *checks notes, 1997 - 1997?!? - the UK took the competition seriously, a proper act performing a good, memorable and engaging song. Katrina and the Waves toured Europe, promoted the song and duly won. The part that I struggle with is investing half a million notes into something you've no serious intention of winning.

Basically, the UK is the EFC of Eurovision, been there since the start, chuck money at absolute dross hardly ever competitive.
