Cork Evertonian

Player Valuation: £50m
This is a question for those lucky enough to have seen both. These two sides are the greatest in our modern history, but which one was better? It's probably a difficult question to answer, but i think it makes for an interesting discussion.

I doubt many have seen both sides in action.
I was 7 and I can't recall that far back.
They're all busy in the old picture thread the ones you need, and when they see that stuff about alan ball,it'll finish them.

1984-5: you couldn't kick them off the pitch; they carried more goal-threats; and they could control the pace of the game better. Oddly enough, though, the 1969-70 team were, at their peak, even better to watch, particularly when the Holy Trinity were firing on all cylinders.
PS For an example of the latter, watch them at The Pit in the 2-0 win - the HT reduced the place to a library in the first twenty minutes.

I heard someone say before that the 1970 squad was better, but that the 1985 one was more successful. I'm sick of posting and reading about Benitez, so i thought i might as well start up, a more positive and happier topic of discussion. I was too young to remember the 80's squad, but i have memories of 1995 at least. It's the poor buggers, who've seen us win nothing i feel sorry for.

The media always painted a picture of the latter team having no superstars, suited their narrative.
I'd disagree they were superstars.
That's true but they were the epitome of a team. They all worked for each other.

Like you I was 9 in 1970 and whilst I remember my Alan Ball posters on the wall I honestly dont remember much about that great team.

The 84/85 team gave me so much pleasure.

I was 14 the night we won the League in 1970 so I was lucky enough to have seen both of the sides. I personally thought that the 1970 side were possibly the more stylish in their football but the 85 team were possibly fitter and more powerful.

I suppose it all depends on the definition of better?
I’m one of the lucky ones, I was only 10 when I watched us win the league v West Brom in 1970 so admittedly memories fade slightly! The 69-70 team was a joy to watch, and the Holy Trinity were called that for a reason. They were a cracking footballing team, but had one or two in there who could mix it up if required!
The 84-85 team grew together over the previous couple of years, but the Reid and Gray transfers added something special, then they won the cup! In 84-85 they were truly exceptional, if teams tried to outplay them they couldn’t, if teams tried to bully them they couldn’t, and similiar to the 69-70 team they played some great football at times backed up by the worlds best goalie!
I genuinely honestly don’t know who would win if they were in some sort of weird time warp and could play each other at their peak, my heart probably would say the 69-70 team, my head the 84-85 team because they never gave in and never knew when they were beaten!
Was an “honour” to watch them both!

P.S Haven’t cast a vote as it’s too difficult to choose!

It's a photo finish / dead heat we need a tiebreak.
So we leave racing terms and go to snooker - bear with me
69-70 would score more 147s
84-85 would win more of the tight frames, the 58-52 black ball frames.
So I score it 29 frames to 28 in favour of 84-85...as they hated to lose a bit more

But.

Given the keys to the De Lorean, who would I go and watch?
tbh, 68-69 the football was out of this world,
Then 69-70 who gained a slightly more pragmatic edge and still played teams off the park.

When City start slinging the ball about without seeming to look...and it gets there, like over the last 3 or 4 seasons is as near as you'll see to that late 60s teams - they were that good.

I think that post probably answers my question the best really.

Yeah my Everton highlight is the 09 FA Cup Final

would love to see us win something one day , or even just get back to being Europa regulars

I was 11 when we won our last trophy. I so badly want to experience it again! I'm not sure that we'll ever win the league again. But hopefully, we'll win a few FA Cups and League cups in the coming years. Hopefully we'll win a european trophy or two as well. So let's keep our heads up. Our day in the sun will eventually come.;)
